The old Hocking Riverbed runs below Mulberry Street and Park Place, adjacent to Oxbow Trail. The photograph above shows the view from the Richland Avenue bridge, looking towards Clippinger Laboratories. Emeriti Park, also located in the riverbed, is beyond and to the right of the region illustrated here. Since this photo was taken, the new Student Center has been constructed in the foreground region of this photo, and to the left.
History of the River
The Hocking River used to follow this route, and used to flood regularly. In the late 1960s, the Army Corps of Engineers re-routed the Hocking River to its present course. The old riverbed now serves to carry storm water to the Hocking.
