The mission of the Performance/Pedagogy program is to train performers in the art of teaching. Areas of concentration available in the Master of Music with emphasis in pedagogy degree program are brass, strings, woodwinds, voice, and piano. The goal of the pedagogy emphasis program is to prepare students for teaching in colleges, public schools, and private studios.

Music Performance (Performance/Pedagogy) Master's Degree
The Performance/Pedagogy program trains performers in the art of teaching. It prepares students for teaching in colleges, public schools, and private studios. A greater emphasis is given to pedagogy and pedagogical techniques, including teaching methods and materials, than in the traditional performance curriculum.
Areas of concentration available in the Master of Music with emphasis in pedagogy degree program are brass, strings, woodwinds, voice, and piano. Students pursuing the pedagogy degree in woodwinds, brass, or strings will develop competencies on the other instruments within each group and have opportunities to perform in appropriate ensembles on the secondary instrument.
Students in piano also receive group and private piano instruction. An audition is required on the major instrument for admission to these programs. It is advantageous to have previous experience on at least one other family instrument for students pursuing the degree in brass, woodwinds, or strings.

Admission Requirements
Acceptance into the Master of Music in Performance with Emphasis in Performance/Pedagogy program is by audition only for all entering students. The audition is required on the major instrument. The audition is for both admission and talent-based scholarship decisions.

Share Your Musical Interests
The School of Music at Ohio University offers a variety of musical ensembles designed to meet the educational and artistic needs of our majors, and also qualified students from other academic disciplines who wish to continue their involvement in music performance.
School of Music large ensemble offerings include choral groups, symphony and campus orchestras, three symphonic bands, two jazz ensembles, and the marching band. The Opera Theater presents at least one main stage production each year as well as a recital of opera scenes.
In addition to the large performing ensembles, students may choose to participate in small mixed groups including the New Music Ensemble, jazz combos, and various woodwind, brass, and string chamber ensembles. Smaller vocal ensembles are often formed from within each choral group. Like-instrumental ensembles such as Flute Choir, Clarinet Choir, Saxophone Quartets, Brass Quintets, Trumpet Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Jazz Percussion Ensemble are also available to interested students.
OHIO's Performing Arts Series
Ohio University's premier concert and performance series, organized by the Division of Student Affairs, and hosted in venues across campus, while primarily staging concerts and events at the Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium.
The Performing Arts series is home to a wide variety of arts and entertainment, from Grammy-award winning Kenny G and South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the Wizard of Oz play and country singer Sara Evans. The Memorial Auditorium and Stuart’s Opera House host some of the University and community’s top shows, acts, and events. We also host a regular film series and an acoustic showcase for movie and music buffs alike.
Performance/Pedagogy Master of Music Courses & Curriculum

The Performance/Pedagogy program requires a minimum of 36 to 47 credit hours, depending on the track. Complete the requirements for one of the five tracks together with the culminating recital that is required of all students.
Culminating Experience: All students in this program will give a final recital, which will demonstrate their competence on both their major instrument as well as secondary instrument(s). In addition, students will be evaluated while teaching instruments in their area of study.
