Summer 2019 Program Information

This summer, immerse yourself in the fine arts with Ohio University’s College of Fine Arts Summer Studios—intensive, hands-on explorations in the Schools of Art + Design, Music, Dance, Film, and Theater. Develop your personal voice while creating and performing college-level works in our professional studio facilities!

High school students aged 14-18 have the option of commuting to campus every day or staying on campus in university residence halls for the full college experience. Focus your energy on an area of study, relax and enjoy time with peers during coordinated evening and weekend activities, and take the time to explore our beautiful campus in Athens, Ohio!

Choose from one-week and two-week courses taught by Ohio University faculty and professional artists, designers, and performers.

Art + Design

SESSION 1: JUNE 17–21, 2019

Ceramics Materials + Form (ages 14–18)

In this intensive studio course, students engage directly in the life of the ceramics studio, from preparation of clay to kiln firing. Hand-building techniques as well as wheel throwing are introduced, with an exploration of contemporary ceramics practices including functional objects and sculptural forms. No previous experience is required.

Graphic Design Intensive (ages 14–18)

Graphic Design Intensive introduces students to the exciting field of graphic design through creative projects and real-world assignments. With faculty who are also practicing artists and designers, students explore topics such as storyboarding, logos, typography, websites, and data mapping using analog and digital techniques. Digital equipment is provided and no previous experience is required.

SESSION 2: JUNE 24–28, 2019

Painting + Drawing Studio (ages 14–18)

This immersive studio experience helps students develop their individual painting and drawing practices through explorations of mark-making, material, and composition. Students complete individually-driven projects informed by the work of contemporary and historical artists. Abstraction and representation, including working from live models, are covered as part of the course. No previous experience is required.

Digital Art + Fabrication (ages 14–18)

Students in this digital lab explore professional tools and technology to develop their ideas and bring them to life from sketchbook to final product. Individual and group activities introduce Adobe Creative Suite software and techniques such as laser cutting and 3D printing in the context of contemporary art and design practices. Equipment is provided and no previous experience is required.

Music 

JUNE 24–28, 2019

OHIO Summer Band Camp (ages 13–18) 
For over fifty years, high school brass, woodwind, and percussion students have visited Athens, Ohio to make music with the renowned faculty of the Ohio University School of Music. The OHIO Summer Band Camp continues this tradition for students who want to enhance their musicianship and interact with other student musicians from across the state and region. Band Camp students develop their music skills through large ensemble participation, master classes, individual lessons, academic classes, and concerts. This exciting experience concludes with a finale concert in the Ohio University Recital Hall.

OHIO Summer String Camp (ages 13–18)

For over fifty years, high school string students have visited Athens, Ohio to make music with the renowned faculty of the Ohio University School of Music. The OHIO Summer String Camp continues this tradition for students who want to enhance their musicianship and interact with other student musicians from across the state and region. String camp students develop their music skills through large ensemble participation, master classes, individual lessons, academic classes, and concerts. This exciting experience concludes with a finale concert in the Ohio University Recital Hall.

 

OHIO Summer Piano Camp (ages 13–18) 

The Ohio University Summer Piano Camp provides pre-collegiate students with the opportunity to study piano in a stimulating and nurturing environment under the guidance of our distinguished artist faculty. This intensive program provides participants with both individual and group instruction, supervised practice time, master classes, ensemble study, performance opportunities, and seminars on a variety of topics (such jazz piano, organ, practice strategies, careers in music, and more). 

Geared toward pianists in grades 7–12 who are playing at the intermediate through advanced levels. Students should bring on polished solo and one solo that is in-progress, both from the standard classical literature. Additional repertoire is encouraged but not required.

 

Ohio Summer Vocal Camp (ages 13–18) 

For over fifty years, high school choral students have visited Athens, Ohio to make music with the renowned faculty of the Ohio University School of Music. The OHIO Summer Vocal Camp continues this tradition for students who want to enhance their musicianship and interact with other student musicians from across the state and region. Vocal camp students develop their music skills through large ensemble participation, master classes, individual lessons, academic classes, and concerts. This exciting experience concludes with a finale concert in the Ohio University Recital Hall.

Dance 

JUNE 17–28, 2019

Summer Dance Institute with David Dorfman Dance (open to pre-professional and professional dancers ages 15 and older)

In this exciting two-week intensive, participants work with the New York-based David Dorfman Dance company, along with several former company members, to develop technical skills and creative exploration in contemporary dance. Students utilize practices in technique, text, improvisation, repertory, and partnering as a means for professional and personal development, resulting in the creation of new collaborative work to be showcased in a final performance. Recommended for intermediate and advanced level dancers ages 15 and up.

This summer course is open to teens and adults.

Film 

JUNE 17–28, 2019

Summer Film Lab (ages 14–18) 
Students with an interest in story-telling will have the opportunity to create short video works from initial screenwriting to final production 

in this two-week intensive film-making lab. The course explores documentary and narrative modes using historical and contemporary examples, and culminates in a final screening of student work.

Theater

JUNE 10–21, 2019

Musical Theater (ages 14–18) 
In this intensive and exhilarating course, students develop skills in acting, dance, and vocal performance as they train directly with school faculty to create the next generation of musical theater. Professional techniques in contemporary and alternative singing styles are introduced, along with modern and jazz dance techniques. The course culminates in a final review-style performance featuring students’ solo and group work.

JULY 15–19, 2019

Tantrum Teens Performance Lab (ages 14-18) 

This Performance Intensive is for creative teens interested in making their own theater work.  We use acting, writing and movement improvisations to explore personal narrative and the active imagination.  Come prepared to take risks and discover your fierce creative self.  The camp culminates in a showing of the original work.

Commuter only; no residential options for this camp.
