The Ohio University string faculty is dedicated to training highly motivated string players to take their place with technical skill, musicianship, musicality, and entrepreneurship in today's highly competitive music profession. Our faculty are committed to providing dedicated individual attention, tailored to each student's unique needs. Students have ample performance opportunities in ensembles such as Symphony Orchestra, Campus Orchestra, Chamber music ensembles, and New Music Ensemble. Regular master classes, visiting artists, solo competitions and performance laboratory opportunities are an integral part of the curriculum. Students also have the opportunity to gain teaching experience through Athens Community Music School and its satellite programs.
The string division faculty are internationally recognized performers, clinicians and pedagogues. Many of our alumni hold faculty positions at colleges and universities, perform in various orchestras, are orchestra directors in public and private schools, and serve as independent string teachers.

Our graduate students also have the opportunity to perform with several regional orchestras, participate in numerous guest artist masterclasses, and teach through Athens Community Music School and its new string satellite programs in Logan and Gallipolis.
Acceptance into the Master of Music in Performance program is by audition only for all entering students.

Additional information: All repertoire must be performed by memory, with the exception of contemporary works. A comprehensive repertoire list should be submitted with the application or presented to the jury at the audition. This list should include repertoire, both solo and chamber, that has been studied and performed.

Auditioning students will perform one composition from TWO of the following categories. Memorization is optional but preferable.
Live auditions are strongly encouraged as the live audition provides students the opportunity to meet our faculty and explore the campus. Exceptions may be made in rare circumstances, and must be approved by the division chair. International students who are unable to travel to campus may elect to submit live performances (video) of the audition repertoire via YouTube, Vimeo or a similar service or schedule a video conferenced audition and interview. All applications and auditions must be received and completed by March 1 in order to receive full scholarship and graduate assistantship consideration. Live interviews are required in order to be considered for a graduate assistantship. For international applicants, an interview via Skype may be arranged in lieu of an on-campus interview.

Recognized as a vibrant cellist and educator, Jose Rocha has enjoyed a diverse musical career that includes collaborations with Ray Charles, Bobby Mcferrin, Ben Folds, Marvin Hamlisch, Johnny Mathis, Ray Price, Glenn Frey, Frank Sinatra Jr., The Knights, and Time for Three, among others. An active chamber musician, Rocha has performed recitals throughout Europe and Latin America.
Performer and pedagogue, Dr. Nathan Southwick has “illuminated and enlivened” audiences and students as a solo, chamber, and symphonic musician by giving engaging and distinctive concerts and classes throughout North and Central America, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and Italy.
