[Spring 2022] In this episode Kelee Riesbeck of Talking Studio interviews two OHIO grad students studying playwrighting about the sometimes terrifying act of writing plays then releasing their work to the world. Playwrights klae bainter and Ivan Mosley open up about their plays being featured at the 28th Annual Seabury Quinn Jr. Playwrights’ Festival in Athens, Ohio, April 14-16 and 20-23. Episode 15: A ghost story, a love story: MFA students direct

[Spring 2022] Live, staged performances are back! Talking Studio talks to two grad students enrolled in Ohio University’s direction program about their process in choosing and presenting two works, one a ghost story, the other, a love story. Featuring Molly Donahue, who is directing Concord Floral, and Adam Zarowski, who is directing Motherfucker With The Hat. Both will be staged in rep March 25 – April 2 at the Hahne Theatre in Athens at 7:30 The plays are free to attend and are open to the public. Seating is limited.

Episode 13 - Embracing Monsters

[Spring 2021] Talking Studio gathered the CoArts staff and two artists who worked with the women to learn about the program. What emerged is this episode of the College of Fine Arts’ podcast, Talking Studio, called, “Embracing monsters.” It unpacks how using the expression of art informs the intense—and often painful—process of healing. This episode features CoArts’ Angela Sprunger and OHIO College of Fine Arts faculty and artists Lindsey Martin and Jessica Fletcher.

Episode 11 - Tantrum Theater and a historical triptych for the ages

[Spring 2021] On November 13 Tantrum Theater, Ohio University’s professional theater, begins streaming This is Not What I Expected When I Imagined a Republic, a historical triptych, that is part dance-theatre, part card game, and part good old kitchen drama. The play mythologies of what it means to be a republic(an), how that’s changed over time, and what to do when you discover your supposedly future life partner has just voted Republican. And you are not “a Republican.” Talking Studio talked with the play’s author Daria Miyeko Marinelli, director ameenah kaplan, and Tantrum Theater’s Artistic Director Michael Lincoln to get a behind-the-scenes look at how this play took shape in the age of streamed and Zoomed content, yet still feels like live theater.

Episode 10 - Improv for art...and for life

[Spring 2021] A sense of play and collaboration without judgement is at the core of the art of improvisational performance. Improve can teach us about ourselves, about the ways of others, and about trust. But does it work in the virtual setting? In this episode of Talking Studio, I talk with Tantrum Theater’s Josh Coy, the Columbus-based Nest Theater co-founders Tara DiFrancisco and Rance Rizutto, and Passion Works Studio’s Nancy Epling about an improv collaboration, together with Ohio University’s School of Theater students, that has brought artists together virtually to learn from one another…and to play.

Episode 9 - Innovation with AN ILIAD: Magic happened

[Spring 2021] In this episode of Talking Studio, Director Emily Penick shares how she found a way to turn an epic stage drama into a film shot outdoors with actors and crew socially distanced and wearing masks when not in scene. Penick is joined by Anastasiia Kulikalova the film’s director of Photography and current master’s degree candidate in the University’s School of Film. Together they unpack how the project came together in a very shortened amount of time, and what the work means to them.

[May 2020] Brian Evans, faculty in the School of Theater received the coveted University Professor Award this spring, an award program run by and voted on solely by OHIO students. We caught up with Evans to unpack his approach to guiding student actors—even in the confines of the virtual-only space required because of the COVID-19 pandemic—while still maintaining his professional acting career.

Episode 7 - Art making for global good

[Spring 2020] OHIO faculty Chris Thompson and John Sabraw unpack how students from OHIO and two Japanese universities are forming a bridge between cultures through art making. Students from Chubu and Iwate Prefectural Universities met with OHIO College of Fine Arts and College of Arts & Science students in January and generated a creative spark for the making of a mural that will adorn a 48-foot seawall in Tarō, Japan, a project conceived in September 2019 called the U.S.-Japan Global Engagement Project.
