Advances in health care are being made every day, and clinical studies are at the forefront of these advances. Scientists, doctors and research teams are constantly working to find ways to improve our health and quality of life.
The Clinical & Translational Research Unit, part of Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, is a part of these advances. The CTRU offers many opportunities for those living in Athens and surrounding areas to get involved in research happening in their own back yard.
What are clinical studies and translational research?
A clinical study helps evaluate the effectiveness and safety of medical treatments, procedures, programs and medical devices. The research helps answer important questions that may improve our ability to detect, prevent or treat various health conditions or diseases.
Translational research is clinical research that tests discoveries made in the laboratory to see if they are useful in the clinic. Translational research can also take these discoveries into the community, where new knowledge can be introduced to the broader population and incorporated into mainstream practice.
How to participate in clinical studies at the CTRU
Some studies are for people with certain health conditions or diseases. For other studies, healthy volunteers are needed.

ResearchMatch
ResearchMatch has a simple goal – to bring together two groups of people who are looking for one another: (1) people who are trying to find research studies, and (2) researchers who are looking for people to participate in their studies. It is a free and secure registry developed by major academic institutions across the country who want to involve volunteers in the mission of helping today’s research make a real difference for everyone’s health in the future.
