The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine’s newest medical education facility, Heritage Hall, was recently recognized with an Outstanding Project Award in the Spring 2023 issue of Learning by Design magazine. Heritage Hall was one of 51 education facilities featured and one of five universities or colleges recognized.

The biannual awards highlight best practices in architecture, design and planning in educational settings, including preK-12 school districts, colleges and universities.

According to Mark Goodman, publisher, the awards recognize institutions and their architectural firms “for going beyond by creating safe, secure, dry, and warm campuses and facilities that also allow for the new built environments to accommodate today’s standard practices while being adaptable for unknown future pedagogies and diverse human needs.”

Volunteers recommended by the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education and The Association of Learning Environments judged submissions using established design criteria. Awards were categorized into four levels: Grand Prize, Citation of Excellence, Honorable Mention and Outstanding Achievement.

Heritage Hall was designed with the college’s wellness philosophy and curriculum in mind. Perkins and Will in association with DesignGroup led the design. Heritage Hall opened for classes in August 2021.

More information about the award can be found in the spring issue of Learning By Design.
