Reconnect... with the DOTS program

March 28, 2022

The Heritage College is committed to being part of something bigger than ourselves, and we strive to attract students with the same outlook. For second-year medical student Becky Bracken, the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than herself came through participation in Doctors on the Streets (DOTS).

Through DOTS, students from our Cleveland campus work alongside Dr. Leanne Chrisman-Khawam, assistant professor of social medicine and director of our Transformative Care Continuum, each week during the winter to provide health services to Cleveland’s West side homeless population. While the program certainly benefits care recipients, it also affords important life lessons to the providers.

For Becky, participation in DOTS feels more like an honor than a service. "It's a tremendous privilege to be here. I feel lucky every day that I get to do this," she says.

I also feel lucky -- lucky to be part of such an altriustic college community, a community that centers upon care for those who need it most.

Thank you for taking time to reconnect and learn about Doctors on the Streets through the eyes of one of our standout osteopathic medical students. I have no doubt that the experiences afforded through DOTS are preparing Becky and her fellow volunteers for a lifetime of top-quality care provision for those in need.
