Winter Break Closing
Returning for Spring 2023 Semester?
All Ohio University residence halls will officially close on Friday, December 9 at 8:00 p.m. Students must vacate their residence hall room within 24 hours of their last final exam, or by Friday, December 9 at 8:00 p.m., whichever comes first. If students living on campus for the fall semester plan to return for the spring semester, they can leave their personal belongings in their residence hall room. However, students will not have access to their room or personal items during winter break closure.
Students need to follow the check-out guidelines provided by in-hall staff. A brief overview of cleaning guidelines can be found below.
- Rooms must be clean prior to departure.
- Trash must be removed and taken to the dumpster outside of the building.
- Remove all food items from the microwave and refrigerator units.
- Defrost the units and clean the microwave and fridge.
- Unplug the microwave and fridge unit and leave doors open, the cord should be put over the front of the refrigerator.
- Non-perishable food and personal items may be kept in the room over winter break.
Fall Semester One Night Extension Request
Students with an extenuating circumstance can request a one-night extension by clicking on the 'Contracts & Applications' tab and completing the Fall One Night Extension Request on their Housing Self-Service page. Students receiving an extension must check out no later than 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10.
If a student is seeking housing accommodations after December 10, at 6:00 p.m., they will need to fill out a Winter Break Housing Application located on their Housing Self-Service page. More information can be found below.
Winter Break Housing
Students needing to remain on campus for any portion of Winter Break can elect to stay in interim housing. Interim housing is available from Saturday, December 10 through Thursday, January 12.
The Winter Break Housing Application will open as of October 1 and is required to reside on campus during the winter break closure. To complete the application, students can visit their Housing Self-Service page, click on the ‘Contracts & Applications’ tab, and select Winter Break Housing Application. The cost for interim housing is $30/night, $125/week or $400/month and will be charged directly to the student's account.
During the winter break period, students will be required to transition into new, temporary assignments if their hall is not open during the break. Buildings have not yet been identified, but temporary assignments will likely be in six-person multi-occupancy spaces.
To ensure spaces are cleaned prior to students arriving for the spring semester, winter break residents who will be residing on campus for spring 2023 will be transitioned to their spring assignment on Tuesday, January 10. If a student staying over the break period needs to relocate to a temporary housing assignment, the new assignment will be communicated by Monday, December 5 to their OHIO email account.
Not Returning for Spring 2023 Semester?
Students who plan to withdraw or transfer at the end of the semester should notify the office of Housing and Residence Life by completing the Intent to Vacate Form on their Housing Self-Service page. Students who complete this form should move out of their fall assignment entirely before leaving for winter break.
Students who make the decision not to return for the spring 2023 semester over winter break, but still have personal belongings in their rooms, will need to check out of their residence hall space no later than Sunday, January 15, 2023 by 10:00 p.m. to avoid spring semester charges. Students must officially check out with an in-hall staff member and return their room key to properly check out. A $100 minimum fee is charged to students who do not complete the checkout process properly. Additional fees will be assessed for any items left by the student.
Once the student properly checks out no later than 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, the spring semester room and board charge will be removed from the student’s account by Wednesday, January 18. Students checking out after 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 15 will be subject to the refund schedule per their Housing Contract.
Students with a Bobcat Cash balance of $15 or more, who are not returning next semester, are eligible for a refund. The Bobcat Cash Account Balance & Refund Policy and the electronic refund form can be found at here.

Culinary: The last meal served on the fall 2022 semester meal plan is dinner on Friday, December 9. The first meal served on the spring 2023 semester meal plan will be brunch on Sunday, January 15, 2023. Click here for dining hall hours of operation.
Storage: Storage is offered at off campus storage companies. There are no University affiliated storage options.
