OUPD Self-Defense Training

OHIO Planning Units and Departments can request special training sessions from OUPD that cover awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

The classes are taught by Ohio University police officers who are certified RAD instructors. The RAD System of Physical Defense is currently being taught at dozens of colleges and universities around the US and Canada. The growing widespread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity, and effectiveness of our tactics, solid research, legal defensibility and unique teaching methodology.

To request a training, please contact Evan Wilkof (wilkof@ohio.edu) or visit Request Training or Program and complete the online form.

Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR)

You can request a QPR suicide prevention training for your next staff meeting or event.

QPR is designed to teach participants how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis, how to offer hope, and how to get help. Much like CPR, QPR is an emergency mental health intervention — a simple but effective approach that anyone can learn.

We offer 60-minute QPR Gatekeeper Trainings led by trained facilitators. Participants will learn how to:

  • Question someone who may be struggling
  • Persuade them to seek help
  • Refer them to appropriate resources

Trainings are capped at 35 participants.

Bobcats Who Care Suicide Gatekeeper Training

You can request a Bobcats Who Care Suicide Gatekeeper Training for your next staff meeting or event.

Bobcats Who Care is an interactive, campus-specific gatekeeper training program designed to help participants recognize and respond to individuals who may be in distress or contemplating suicide. Participants learn about suicide and its impact on campus, identify warning signs, practice empathic listening and direct communication skills, and explore how to connect someone in distress to professional support both on and off campus.

We offer 3-hour trainings in either in-person or virtual format, led by trained facilitators. A minimum of 15 participants is required to hold a session, and participation is capped at 30.

Recovery Is Spoken Here (RISH) Training

Departments or groups can request a RISH training for meetings or other events.

Recovery Is Spoken Here is a 30-45 minute, discussion-based presentation that educates faculty, staff, and students on how to foster a recovery-friendly campus environment and become Recovery Allies. Participants will learn the warning signs of substance misuse and addictive behaviors, challenges faced by students in recovery, the use of recovery-friendly language, and how to connect students with the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) and other campus/community resources.

To request a training, please contact the Collegiate Recovery Community at crc@ohio.edu.

Landing Zone

Landing Zone training provides participants with an understanding of basic military structure and culture, unique challenges faced by student Veterans when transitioning from service to school, the impact of VA education benefits on advising and course planning, and how PTSD, TBI, and other service-related conditions may affect learning.

The four zones are Military 101, Our Veterans in Transition, The GI bill, and Student Veteran wellness.

Customized Landing Zone training consists of a five-hour, in-person training (with a one-hour lunch break) that covers all four zones for any college or department, including regional campuses. The minimum number of participants is ten.

  • Recommended for OHIO faculty and staff supporting and working alongside veterans, especially student veterans.

If you are interested in arranging a customized Landing Zone session, contact Ray Dixon, Assistant Director of Veterans and Military Student Services (rdixson@ohio.edu)
