Introducing this year's distinguished alumni, Chris Frederick, who currently serves as Director of Special Events for amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, a pioneering nonprofit dedicated to funding HIV/AIDS research. In his role, Chris manages a portfolio of major fundraising galas globally, generating millions annually. However, Chris's journey to this impactful position traces back to his time in Athens, where he served as a Resident Assistant. Chris was a Resident Assistant his second year (2002-2003) and third year (2003-2004) in Ryors Hall on West Green.

Despite initially intending to attend law school, Chris found his path leading him to New York City, where he embarked on a successful career in LGBTQ advocacy and event management. As Executive Director of NYC Pride, he significantly expanded the organization's budget and fundraising efforts. Chris's impact extends beyond NYC Pride, with notable roles in marketing, sales, and events for prominent LGBTQ publications and organizations. His dedication to supporting LGBTQ professionals globally stems from his foundational experiences at Ohio University. His profound commitment to Ohio University and its students truly merits his recognition as a distinguished alumnus.

Tell us about your experience working for Housing and Residence Life.

I really loved being an RA. I felt as though it was an amazing leadership opportunity that set me up for success within my career. It helped to develop a skill set that was easily transferred to becoming a manager of a larger team. Working with a range of diverse people and identities, learning how to be seen as a leader, developing interpersonal skills with residents. All of these skills were crucial elements of the role that helped to make me who I am today. Additionally, it was a great initial test to live independently in a room by myself, managing my expenses and income which helped me to make the leap to live off-campus my senior year and ultimately in New York after graduation.

What are you most proud of from your time on staff?

I think I’m most proud of the community that I was able to create with my residents. I still see many of them on social media as close friends after these many years and it makes me proud that I was able to foster a hall that created friendships that have lasted decades.

Have you been able to stay connected with your co-workers and peers?

Yes, absolutely. Social media was just developing when I was in my third year, so I was able to stay connected with my past residents and co-workers. I still have a range of friends including my friend Erin who was an RA in Voigt Hall that I’m still very close with today.

What was your biggest challenge as a staff member?

Looking back at the experience I realized, at times, it was challenging for me to confront residents or get in the middle of conflict as I’m not really a confrontational person. By the end of my time as an RA, I do think I found a way to balance the need to uphold rules, be respected by my residents and be seen as a leader within the complex.

What is one of your most memorable moments at Ohio University?

I think some of my most memorable moments at Ohio University consist of being involved in the Residence Life community whether it was walking the halls, sitting in the office connecting with residents, or being seen as someone residents could count on, all of these moments I look back at so fondly. Also, I was heavily involved in Student Senate and was involved in several election cycles and ultimately became the Residence Life Director for Student Senate. Working to improve the Residence Life experience as an elected Student Senator really helped to develop my passion for politics and my focus of purpose driven work.

What lessons did you learn during your time at Ohio University that remain important to you today? How have they impacted your current work?

I believe it’s important to always center yourself and be empathetic to those around you. Give space to those that may have differing backgrounds, varied means, or lack the same privileges as you. Listen, learn, and embrace these stories which can be used to ultimately make yourself and the world a better place. By opening yourself and embracing a wide array of diverse perspectives it will only make you a better leader within your career throughout life.

What does it mean to you to be the 2023 HRL Distinguished Alumni award recipient?

I’m so honored to receive this award and greatly appreciate those at Ohio University that want to spotlight LGBTQ voices within the alumni community. I hope that I can inspire those on campus and beyond to live their true selves and follow their life passions. Additionally, Residence Life set me up with important leadership skills that I continue to use with my teams throughout my career. At the end of the day, I am just a kid from Ohio that followed his passions, and I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the experience I gained at Ohio University.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

I’m thrilled I can be back for my first homecoming since 2008 and thank you again to the Ohio University staff for truly making this a memorable experience. Oh, and go Bobcats!
