Traveling This Vacation Season? Keep Your Devices and Data Safe
April 3, 2026
As vacation season approaches, many of us will be traveling for work, personal time, or both. Whether you’re headed across the state or abroad, a little preparation can go a long way in keeping University data and devices secure.
Before You Go
- Update your devices: Install the latest operating system and software updates on phones, tablets, and laptops.
- Back up important data: Store files in approved university services such as OneDrive, Teams, or network storage.
- Limit what you take: Bring only the devices and data you truly need.
- Notify OIT Security if you'll be working internationally: If you plan to access Ohio University systems or data while traveling outside the U.S., you must notify the Information Security Office before you leave. International travel may require additional safeguards, temporary device configurations, or approvals to protect University data and comply with regulations.
While Traveling
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for work whenever possible. If needed, take extra precautions and avoid accessing sensitive systems.
- Set up VDI: We strongly encourage the use of VDI while traveling instead of VPN.
- Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and never share your credentials.
- Keep devices secure: Use screen locks, keep devices with you at all times, and avoid leaving them unattended.
- Be alert for scams: Travel often triggers phishing attempts related to bookings, accounts, or urgent requests.
If Something Goes Wrong
- Report lost or stolen devices immediately to the OIT Service Desk.
- Change your passwords if you suspect an account compromise.
- Contact OIT Security if you experience anything suspicious while traveling.
