Certificate Programs for Political Science Students

Environment Studies Certificate

The field of environmental studies encompasses complex interactions among humans and other organisms, and the biophysical environment. This certificate is for students who want to gain knowledge and understanding about the interdisciplinary field of environmental studies. The certificate coupled with a degree in Political Science provides a strong background for individuals interested in environmental policy, law and lobbying. See how to enroll and certificate requirements at the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs.

French and Francophone Studies Certificate

The French and Francophone Studies Certificate is an interdisciplinary exploration of the French and Francophone world, which today includes 230 million individuals. Led by faculty from five departments across the university, the certificate views the French and Francophone world through the lenses of history, language, literature, law, culture, society, environmental science, and politics. The certificate, which has an Undergraduate and Graduate version, focuses on issues of coloniality, postcoloniality, decolonization, immigration and emigration. Participating scholars work on France, the French Caribbean, Vietnam, Cambodia, Africa, Canada, New Orleans and African American expatriates in Paris.

International Studies Certificates

For students who wish to add an international dimension to their program of study in Political Science, the Center for International Studies offers certificates in:

  • African Studies
  • Asian Studies
  • East Asian Studies
  • European Studies
  • Latin American Studies
  • Southeast Asian Studies
  • War & Peace Studies

Many of these programs feature courses taught by professors in the Political Science Department, and all provide an excellent additional credential for Political Science majors interested in international affairs. See certificate requirements at the Center for International Studies.

Political Communication Certificate

The Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Communications jointly sponsor the certificate in Political Communication for students who wish to supplement their undergraduate major with an inquiry into the arena of politics and government. Political Communication encompasses the interactions of political figures, political interests, the media, and the public. The program is open to any undergraduate student at Ohio University. As a supplement to an undergraduate degree, the certificate shows the student is a strong communicator with a working knowledge of the political system. Students interested in such jobs as legislative aide, political consultant, political reporter, or lobbyist will find the Political Communications program especially relevant. See how to enroll and certificate requirements at the Scripps College of Communication.

Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Certificate

The College of Arts & Sciences offers a Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Certificate. Requirements include Introduction to Women's Studies, Issues in Feminism, and a total of 30 credit hours of specialized coursework. Students interested in the role of women in politics should consider this certificate. See certificate requirements at the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program.
