Ohio University was a 2007 signatory to the Carbon Commitment, formerly the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), committing to becoming a carbon neutral campus before the year 2075. More recently, on his first day in office, Ohio University Former President Nellis signed the "We Are Still In" declaration. As a result of these commitments, the institution developed and has largely met the first set of extensive goals and benchmarks in a 2011 Sustainability Plan and a 2012 Climate Action Plan.
Ohio University Sustainability & Climate Action Plan - The 2021 version of the Sustainability & Climate Action Plan was approved by the Ohio University Board of Trustees on June 18, 2021. The Plan outlines 32 sustainability-focused priorities of the institution in 16 areas (3 core components, 12 themes, and 1 administrative section). Sections of the plan are also posted in their respective theme pages under the "Hubs & Initiatives" top navigation tab.
The Office of Sustainability is grateful to the hundreds of people who provided comments and feedback to versions of this plan over the past several years.
Faculty, staff, students and community members throughout Ohio University campuses & local communities are working together to realize important goals from this plan, such as carbon neutrality, increased local food production and procurement, improvements in energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainability-related education and research. We look forward to advancing these and additional goals with your participation!
The implementation of the innovative recommended strategies identified by faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members requires the support of entire campuses and communities. Students and professionals must work together to hold the University accountable for the impressive goals it has set for itself.
With your support, we can help fund projects required to realize these goals. What dream will you help realize?
Your gift, no matter the amount, makes a huge difference.
Donations made to the "Ohio University Sustainability Fund" will be used to enact infrastructure, curriculum, and research projects that can help advance progress toward the goals within the Sustainability and Climate Action Plan of Ohio University. Projects will not be housed in one single department or division. In fact, it is the intention of the OHIO Foundation that these funds will be utilized by all divisions for various sustainability-related projects which advance institutional sustainability efforts. Donations made to this fund will be added to a pool of sustainability funding and used toward projects agreed upon by various stakeholders. Donors who wish to contribute to a particular project are urged to reach out to the Office of Sustainability (firstname.lastname@example.org, 740-593-0460) before making a donation so that proper funding allocations occur.
