Adolescent-to-Young Adult Partnership

The Patton College of Education's Adolescent-to-Young Adult Education program currently partners with one local school district across one middle school and one high school to provide PDS Teacher Candidate placements during the junior year for students with Integrated Mathematics and Integrated Science majors. Cohort groups spend a year with a team of professors and AYA faculty studying an integrated curriculum and gaining intensive classroom experience.

Athens High School

What is unique about Athens High School?

  • Serves Athens, Chauncey, and The Plains 
  • In 2020, enrollment is approximately 820 students, with a senior class of 197
  • Students choose the academic difficulty of their courses rather than being placed in classes by grade level
  • The majority of the 60 faculty members hold a Master’s degree or higher.  
  • One building houses grades nine through 12
  • AP courses in English Language & Composition, United States History, European History, Chemistry, Physics B, Calculus AB, Computer Science, English Literature & Composition, United States Government & Politics, Spanish Language, French Language
  • In the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test there were two Finalists and three commended students

  • Opportunities to engage with a socioeconomically diverse population of students
  • Mentorship from talented and experienced faculty
  • Access to STEM extracurriculars, such as Robotics and other STEM-themed clubs
  • Math candidates gain experience with CPM curriculum, a student-centered mathematics curriculum designed to promote problem-solving and reasoning

 

Athens Middle School

What is unique about Athens Middle School?

  • Serves students in Grades 7 & 8 in Athens, Chauncey, and The Plains 
  • Access to Honors Math and in school computer coding activities
  • Spring Math day in which students spend an entire day engaging in active math
  • Extensive extracurricular for students including Math Counts and Science Club

 

Opportunities for Candidates

  • Mentorship from talented and experienced math and science teachers, who have long-standing collaborations with OHIO faculty and are knowledgeable about supporting partnership students in connecting their OHIO course experience to their experience at AMS (i.e., connect theory learned in OHIO methods classes to a clinical setting)
  • Opportunities to engage with a socioeconomically diverse population of students
  • Access to STEM extracurriculars, such as Computer Coding Club and other STEM-themed clubs
  • Math candidates gain experience with CPM curriculum, a student-centered mathematics curriculum designed to promote problem-solving and reasoning
  • Opportunities to contribute to annual classroom projects, such as the school pollinator garden
