Subject: New Grading Policy Effective Fall 2017-18

Dear Faculty,

Happy Fall Semester!

This past spring semester the Faculty Senate and Executive Vice President and Provost approved the “Resolution on Academic Participation and Changes to 'F' and 'W' Grades.” These changes to grading are being implemented for Federal compliance reasons. Below are some details that are important for you to know:

  • You will be emailed when a student withdraws from (drops) a class and a “W” grade is assigned. It is your responsibility to enter a P, F, or N for the withdrawn grades. If a P or F is entered, the last date of participation will need to be entered. Withdrawn grade definitions:
    • WP: Withdrawn Passing
    • WF: Withdrawn Failing
    • WN: Withdrawn Never Attended
  • You will be able to enter the P/F/N for withdrawn grades in the Faculty & Advising Center after you are emailed, i.e., you do not need to wait until the end of the semester to record these grades.
  • The last date of participation should be determined based on the student’s last academically related activity for the class. Here are some examples:
    • Physically attending a class where there is an opportunity for direct interaction between instructor and students;
    • Submitting an academic assignment;
    • Taking an exam, an interactive tutorial, or computer-assisted instruction;
    • Attending a study group assigned by the school;
    • Participating in an online discussion about academic matters; and
    • Initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a question about the academic subject studied in the course.

NOTE: Logging in to an online class is not an academically related activity, unless one of the other activities is completed.

  • At the end of the semester, if a student on your class roster never participated or participated and then stopped, but did not officially withdraw, you should assign one of the following grades:
    • FN: Failure Never Attended
    • FS: Failure, Stopped Attending. This grade requires the last know date of attendance or participation.
  • When you assign a Failing (F) grade, you will be asked to confirm that the student completed the course and earned the F.

There is more information available on the University Registrar’s website.

We hope you have a great fall semester!
