Our Mission
The Cardiothoracic Club is dedicated to inspiring and supporting medical students with an interest in cardiothoracic surgery, general cardiology, and other areas of cardiovascular medicine. Its purpose is to provide exposure to the specialty through learning opportunities, mentorship, and career development while building a strong community of future physicians driven by curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to excellence in heart and patient care.

Services Provided
The OUHCOM Cardiothoracic Club provides service by creating educational, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for medical students interested in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, pulmonology, and cardiovascular medicine. The club supports the college and osteopathic profession by helping students explore future career paths, connect with faculty and physicians, and build a stronger community of future physicians committed to heart and patient care. The constitution also includes a Secretary/Community Outreach role responsible for coordinating outreach and philanthropy activities in the community, so philanthropic events may be included as opportunities arise.
Tentative Schedule for 2026-2027
The organization plans to hold executive board and general body meetings at least twice per semester, with additional meetings or events scheduled based on student interest and the judgment of the executive board.
Planned events may include:
- Cardiology and Cardiothoracic surgery interest meetings
- Guest speaker lectures
- Mentorship or networking sessions with physicians and faculty
- Career development events
- Summer opportunity information sessions
- Community outreach or philanthropy activities.
Events will be financed through available organization funding applications and, when needed, money collected on an as needed basis for food, events, or other necessities, since the club does not charge regular dues.
Fall:
- Introductory general body meeting to introduce the Cardiothoracic Club, review leadership, discuss goals for the year, and gauge student interest in cardiology, pulmonology, cardiothoracic surgery, and cardiovascular medicine.
- Guest speaker event with Dr. Koshal focused on careers in cardiology, the role of cardiovascular medicine in patient care, and advice for medical students interested in the field.
- Cadaver lab session with Dr. Koshal using catheters to provide students with hands on exposure to cardiothoracic and cardiovascular anatomy, procedural concepts, and catheter based interventions.
Spring:
- General body meeting and career development session focused on summer opportunities, research, shadowing, and national programs related to cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.
- Mentorship and networking event with faculty, residents, or physicians to help students learn more about specialty pathways and career preparation.
- Community outreach or philanthropy event related to heart health awareness, cardiovascular disease prevention, or patient education.
