Theater Bachelor's Degree

Theater is a collaborative art form, but every theater artist brings their own creative voice to the work. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Theater is designed for students who want to develop as artists while exploring the many ways they can build a life in the field. Whether your passion is in performance, directing, design, production, stage management, playwriting, education, or to explore a combination of disciplines, you’ll have opportunities to develop an educational path that reflects your individual strengths and ambitions. For students who see themselves as multi-hyphenate artists, this excellent program offers the breadth and flexibility to explore multiple roles and discover connections among them.

The Theater B.F.A. degree offers an in-depth exploration of all aspects of the collaborative theater experience. The program is open to accepted Ohio University undergraduates, especially those who have multiple interests and talents in theater and cultural event production. It is excellent training for future public school educators in theater. This professional degree program is for students who demonstrate exceptional talent, technical proficiency, artistic potential, curiosity, and academic rigor.

Theater B.F.A. students take a series of core and practicum courses, plus courses in story, design, technology and communication areas. A culminating seminar completes the senior year.

Possible Double Major, Minors, Certificate Programs

This degree also provides opportunity for adding a double major, minor, or certificate program. OHIO offers certificate programs in a number of areas including: Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Museum Studies, and performing arts health and wellness, to name a few. Secondary majors such as English and creative writing, history, music, political science, pre-law, and sociology have been successful choices. With the addition of exciting one-year master’s programs — the Master of Arts or the Master of Arts Administration — students who wish may obtain a master’s degree in as little as five (5) years.
