Theater – Production Design and Technology Bachelor's Degree

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater (Theater B.F.A.) with a concentration in Production Design and Technology provides an emphasis on the environmental aspects of performance. Design and technology skills, concepts and techniques for scenery, costumes, lighting, properties, sound, and crafts are taught in a series of courses and special projects throughout the four-year curriculum.

 Productions are prepared under the advisement and participation of the production faculty and staff, and qualified students are challenged with major creative, technical, or managerial responsibilities.

Careers with a Theater Production Design and Technology Major

Students completing the Theater B.F.A. with a concentration in Production Design and Technology commonly choose to enter the professional market for performing arts companies, specialized production companies, professional internships, or pursue graduate study.

Ohio University Production Design and Technology students and alumni are hired in summer jobs and full time positions at theaters like Santa Fe Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Studio Theatre in DC and Utah Shakespeare Festival. Design students chose to go directly to work in the New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or other major markets. There are OHIO alumni in all major markets!

Theater – Production Design and Technology Courses & Curriculum

During the first two years, students should complete much of the Theater B.F.A. core and University General Education requirements. In consultation with their faculty mentor, students will take production design and technology foundation courses at the 2000-level and above. The final two years are directed toward honing skills and building a portfolio based on design and technology courses suited to student’s career goals and aspirations. 

  • Design and technology skills, concepts and techniques are taught in a series of courses and special projects throughout the four-year curriculum.
  • Productions are prepared under the close personal advisement and participation of the production faculty and staff.
  • Qualified students are challenged with major creative technical or managerial responsibilities.
  • Qualified upper-level students assist our faculty on their professional design productions at theaters such as Cleveland Play House, Alley Theater, the REP at University of Delaware and Indiana Repertory Theater.
