The Patton College of Education and the School of Theater have an exciting new one-year degree track in Theater Education for students interested in this career path. Students can earn a bachelor’s degree in theater and a master’s degree, with a Multi-Age Visual Arts License, in a total of five years!

This program is for the purpose of Ohio teaching licensure and is open only to students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. An I-20 may not be issued based on admission to this program.
Tuition and fees are assessed based on the number of credit hours of enrollment, Ohio residency and program.

Preparing theater teachers for grades preK-12 with licensure in Ohio, the Theater Education program offers a research-based dynamic curriculum focusing on the development of professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Program faculty members bring expertise in their disciplines as well as experience working in K-12 schools. Faculty members are committed to student success and collaborate with colleagues in the School of Theater and other stakeholders to ensure program rigor and responsiveness to state, local, and national initiatives. Students enjoy the opportunity to become members in student chapters of disciplinary professional organizations.
A key feature of the Theater Education program is its yearlong clinical culminating in a professional internship and a Master’s research project. The Theater Education master’s program can be completed in three academic terms if students (a) begin their program of study during the summer academic term, (b) follow a prescribed sequence of courses, and (c) submit official documentation demonstrating they have successfully passed the required content exam of the Ohio Assessment for Educators.
About the Master of Education in Adolescent-to-Young Adult Education and Multi-Age with Licensure
This is an intensive and hands-on program. Once accepted as a graduate student, you will work closely with a Patton College of Education advisor, learn how to develop lesson plans and strategies for content delivery, complete your student teaching (two days a week in the fall, full-time in the spring), and receive expert guidance that will enable a successful outcome, including licensure.
Yearlong Teaching Internship / Field Placement: All teacher candidates must complete a yearlong internship in a classroom, which includes a Fall seminar (EDPL 6920) and Spring seminar (EDPL 5650). In the fall term, candidates observe and teach in a classroom for a minimum of two full days per week and participate in the Rural Urban Collaborative, a non-consecutive four-day placement in an urban school setting. During the spring term, candidates observe and teach in a classroom full-time and complete the edTPA assessment.
All placements will be made by the OHIO Center for Clinical Practice in Education and may under no circumstances be initiated by the teacher candidate.
