OGO Language Immersion Scholarship

Program Eligibility

Office of Global Opportunities Foreign Language Immersion Scholarship can be used for participation on:

Programs must be credit-bearing, and be at least two weeks in duration. Preference will be given to programs that are four weeks or longer.

Student Eligibility

  • Must be enrolled at Ohio University as a full-time degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing. 
  • Must be applying or accepted to a credit-bearing study away program sponsored by OHIO or another accredited institution. 
  • US citizens, permanent residents and international undergraduate OHIO students are encouraged to apply.  
  • Must be enrolled in at least one foreign language course or course taught in the foreign language during the program. Preference given to applicants taking a course load made up predominately of language courses or courses taught in the foreign language.

Preference will be given to applicants who are studying in non-traditional locations (outside of Western Europe, Oceania and North America), except in those cases where the foreign language isn't widely spoken outside of these locations.

Application Requirements

Read the requirements carefully to make sure you have the required information and materials before you proceed. Once you begin the common scholarship application, you will need to provide answers to all questions in one sitting to submit your application.  

  1. Common Short Essay Prompts - All Applicants
    • Tell us about yourself and your motivation to participate in a global experience. 
      • Consider: What should the scholarship committee know about you?   Why did you select this particular opportunity (location, length, subject area, etc.)?
    • Describe your prospective global experience and the impact it will have on you.
      • Consider: What do you hope to gain from this experience? How will this experience fit into your future academic and professional plans?
  2. Language Immersion Scholarship Additional Questions
    • Provide a list of the courses you will be taking in the foreign language. If you will be completing an internship in the foreign language, indicate the extent in which the host language will be used. 
    • What are your motivations for learning or improving your foreign language skills by studying abroad?
    • How will you improve your language proficiency in and out of the classroom while abroad?
    • How do you intend to use the language after your study abroad experience?

Award Amounts

Awards range from $500 - $1,000. 

Awards are intended to defray the cost of travel associated with global opportunity programs. Award amounts may vary.

Total awards received from OHIO may not exceed combined program fee and estimated out of pocket costs (cost of attendance).

In order to receive an award, the student must be registered with the Office of Global Opportunities through the OGO Student Portal. The award will be directly applied to the student's OHIO account during the term in which the awardee is scheduled to travel.

  • Summer 2024, Fall 2024, and Academic Year 2024-2025 Programs
    • Friday, March 1, 2024 at 11:59pm
  • Winter Break 24-25, Spring Semester 2025, and Spring Break 2025 Programs:
    • To be announced when applications open (roughly the start for Fall 2024 semester)

 

 

Note: It can take up to one month after the scholarship deadline for the scholarship committees to render their decisions.
