Integrated Language Arts Bachelor's Degree – Spanish Education Concentration

The Integrated Language Arts B.S.Ed. with a concentration in Spanish Education prepares you to become a licensed Spanish teacher in Ohio, ready to inspire Spanish students across all grade levels.

Through coursework in Spanish language, Hispanic cultures, linguistics and literary traditions, you will build the advanced proficiency and deep cultural knowledge needed to bring the Spanish-speaking world to life in your classroom. Interactive learning experiences and hands-on teaching experiences will give you the practical teaching skills necessary for engaging and successful teaching. State licensure assessments are integrated into the program of study so that upon successful completion you are positioned to apply for your initial teaching license.

Careers with a Spanish Education Program

After graduating from the Spanish Education program at Ohio University, students are prepared to become licensed Spanish teachers in Ohio. Graduates will be equipped to teach Spanish at every level, guiding their own students as they build Spanish language proficiency and meaningful connections to Hispanic cultures. They will have the necessary skills to foster active and informed citizenship in their students.

Additionally, they will have the opportunity to work in a range of educational settings, including public, private, charter, and magnet schools. Graduates may also pursue careers in educational consulting, community and social services, or fields where bilingual proficiency is a professional asset. With further education, graduates may be eligible for educational leadership positions or advanced study in education, applied linguistics, or related disciplines.

Admissions Information

In addition to first-year admission, teacher candidates must meet additional requirements to continue in the program (see below for additional details):

  • Admission to Teacher Candidacy (typically at the end of the first year)
  • Admission to Advanced Standing (typically at the end of the second year)
  • Admission to the Professional Internship (typically at the end of the third year)

Freshman/First-Year Admission

All students pursuing teacher education programs at Ohio University are subject to the Selective Admission and Retention Program in teacher education. Criteria and procedures are available in the Office of Student Affairs, Patton Hall.

Regional campus students should check with their Office of Student Affairs or the Dean’s office on the regional campus for information.

Integrated Language Arts – Spanish Education Courses & Curriculum

Ohio University requires completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours for conferral of a bachelor’s degree. However, the Integrated Language Arts major with a concentration in Spanish Education requires a minimum of 121 semester hours.

Aside from pre-teacher candidacy and professional internship in teaching courses, students take core courses that help them build a thorough educational foundation and learn the methods for teaching world languages. Through Spanish coursework and electives, students build bilingual proficiency in Spanish while engaging with a rich range of Hispanic literary, artistic, and cultural traditions, from historic texts to modern media, and develop the cross-cultural and linguistic knowledge that deepens their understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.

Additional Opportunities

  • CARE Program


    Candidates can complete the standard AYA program or can apply to participate in the Creative, Active, and Reflective Educators (CARE) program. CARE is a unique partnership with the Federal Hocking School District and includes a focus on democratic education, specialized coursework, and additional classroom experiences that emphasize the whole child from K-12.

  • Overseas Student Teaching


    The Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program offers teacher candidates the unique opportunity to live abroad for an entire semester while completing their professional internship. The program offers students professional and personal growth in ways that are increasingly important for living and teaching in the United States.   • Connavino Honors Program


    The Connavino Honors Program provides a learning community for talented students who intend to pursue a major in teacher education. Students in the Connavino Honors Program complete rigorous inquiry-based courses, which both supplement and augment their regular requirements.
