Clinical Counselor Graduate Assistantship

Position Description

Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) offers six Clinical Counselor Graduate Assistantships that begin in August and conclude in May.

Positions include:

  • 4 Generalist positions
  • 1 Athletics-focused position
  • 1 split position with the Survivor Advocacy Program (SAP)

Standard Responsibilities for All CPS Graduate Assistants

All Clinical Counselor GAs are expected to:

  • Provide individual, group, and crisis counseling to Ohio University students
  • Provide drop-in/intake/crisis coverage (4 hours/week)
  • Participate in training and professional development activities
  • Attend regular clinical supervision (may include supervision from other mental health disciplines)
  • Complete clinical documentation accurately and on time
  • Follow CPS, Division of Student Affairs (DOSA), and University policies, along with ethical guidelines and Ohio law
  • Deliver limited outreach programming, which may occasionally occur in the evenings or on weekends

Types of Positions

CPS Generalist (4 positions)

  • Work 20 hours per week at CPS
  • Follow the standard responsibilities for CPS Graduate Assistants

CPS - Athletics Emphasis (1 position)

  • Work 20 hours per week at CPS
  • Follow the standard responsibilities for CPS Graduate Assistants, with additional focus on:
    • Serving student-athletes
    • Outreach and liaison work with athletics as needed

CPS+SAP Split Position (1 position)

  • Work 20 hours per week total, with 10 hours at CPS and 10 hours at SAP
  • At CPS, follow the standard responsibilities for CPS Graduate Assistants
  • At SAP:
    • Provide immediate crisis support, information, assessment, and safety planning to student survivors and their support people
    • Participate in SAP’s 24/7 hotline rotation (4 weeks/semester), which may include: general information and referrals, hospital advocacy, triage and crisis response
    • Provide trauma-informed support with attention to students who may be marginalized or disproportionately impacted by trauma

Benefits

For All Position Types

  • $15,500 stipend for the academic year
  • Tuition waiver may be available through your academic department (check with them)

Additional Benefit for CPS+SAP Split Position

  • $150/week for participation in SAP’s 24/7 hotline rotation (4 weeks/semester)

Eligibility

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral student in Counselor Education (Counselor Education doctoral students must have earned a master's degree in counseling), or a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology in your third year or beyond.
  • Successful completion of all prior practicum/traineeship and/or internship hours.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for CPS+SAP Split Position

  • Live within a 30-minute commute of the Athens campus for on-call purposes and have reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working as a trainee with CPS.
  • Experience practicing psychotherapy in a clinical setting with college students.
  • Strong clinical, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Commitment to working with Ohio University students in an affirming environment. 
  • Commitment and openness to receiving supervision. 
  • Access to reliable transportation.

    1. Cover letter expressing your interest in the Clinical Counselor Graduate Assistantship.
      • If applying for the CPS - Athletics Emphasis position, please include a statement that outlines your interest and/or experience in working with athletes.
      • If applying for the CPS + SAP Split position, please include a statement about your interest and/or experience in working with trauma.
    2. Curriculum vitae or resume 
    3. Transcripts (may be unofficial; your DARS report may suffice) 
    4. Two reference letters, at least one from someone who can speak to your clinical skills
