March 27, 2024

Alden Library presents "The Crocodile King and the Warrior Simalungun" on Monday, April 1 at 6:00-8:00 PM on the first floor of Alden Library. Light refreshments will be available during intermission.

Shadow puppet theater is a unique form of storytelling in Southeast Asia. This year, a folktale from the Indo-Malay world, entitled the Crocodile King and the Warrior of Simalungun, will come alive on the screen. Kraithong is known for his supernatural ability to communicate and control crocodiles. Watch as he confronts Kraithong, the Thai crocodile hunter, in an epic battle. Join us to experience shadow puppetry at its finest. During the intermission, the audience will be invited to share their reactions and ask questions. Participants will receive modest gifts.

For those interested in learning more about the tradition and history of shadow puppetry, take a look at some of the research materials available at Alden Library. You may also contact Jeffrey Shane, the Southeast Asia Reference Librarian.

We also want the thank the Center for International Studies for collaborating with the Center for International Collections on this and many other initiatives over the years.
