The Libraries have subscriptions to many online databases that you can use to find articles, statistics, data, and other resources necessary for your research.
Library Search
This database (featured on the front page of our website) is a great starting point for articles on all subjects.
- It searches across many of our separate database subscriptions, which can be an ideal strategy if you don't know where to start your research.
- It will also find books and videos on your topic.

Find Journals by Title
To find a specific journal in our collection:
- Use the Journal Search in the library catalog to search for the journal name.
- Contact your subject librarian with questions about journal access.
Find Scholarly Articles by Topic
If you are looking for articles on a particular topic and don't know where to look:
- Start with the Library Search box on the library website home page.
- Use the Filters on the search results page to limit to scholarly articles or peer-reviewed journals.

Find A Specific Article by Citation
If you have a citation for a specific article:
- Search for the article title in the Library Search box on the library website home page.
- If that doesn't work, you can also find the journal with a Journal Search in the library catalog, then navigate to the article from the journal's site.
Find Scholarly Articles by Discipline
Many academic disciplines have their own article databases that you can use to search for articles within a specific field. These databases are also indexed in ArticlesPlus, but searching subject databases separately can yield more-focused search results.

Library Search
- Use the Library Search catalog to search for books.
- Library Search includes books -- as well as videos, magazines, journals, newspapers, and more-- available in ALL Ohio University campus libraries, plus the Library Annex.
- If a book is available in the catalog, use the call number to find the book and bring it to the service desk to check out.
- If you need help finding a book, visit a service desk in Alden, contact us, or see our FAQs.
- You can use the "Articles and More" or "OhioLINK Search" options in Library Search to expand your results to millions of books from other libraries around the state via the OhioLINK network.
- You can request OhioLINK items while you are in Library Search. Requested OhioLINK books usually arrive in 3-5 business days.
WorldCat
- Use WorldCat to find books in libraries from all over the world.
- If you find a book you need in WorldCat, request it via Interlibrary Loan and we will borrow it for you.
We have thousands of moving images in streaming and physical formats (DVDs). Our collections contain documentaries, award-winning movies, television series, educational films, and more.

- If you know the title, Start by searching for video/film in the library catalog. This includes all of our DVDs across all campuses and many of the titles in our streaming subscription services.

Newspapers
The library subscribes to newspapers from many geographic locations and time periods, and in many formats such as print, online, or microfilm.
- To see if we have a specific newspaper, start with a Journal Search in the library catalog and search for the newspaper title. This will tell you whether the Libraries has a subscription to that newspaper and how you may access it.

Magazines
To see if we have a specific magazine, start with a Journal Search in the library catalog and search for the newspaper title. This will tell you whether the Libraries has a subscription to that newspaper and how you may access it.
To find magazine articles on your specific topic, search ArticlesPlus on the library home page. In your list of search results, use the filter on the left side to limit to Magazines.
Use the resources below to find theses and dissertations. These tools can also be used to find theses or dissertations written by Ohio University students.
ProQuest Dissertations & Theses A&I
The ProQuest Dissertations & Theses A&I database covers well over 2 million doctoral dissertations and masters theses from around the world. The complete database includes citations going back to the year 1637. The type of coverage and availability of full text, however, varies by date:
- 1637-1980: Online database has citations only; no abstracts. Full text available (for a fee) from ProQuest.
- 1938-1980: Alden Library has a set of microfilms (on the 1st floor) which does include abstracts.
- 1981 to the present: Online database includes abstracts. Full text available (for a fee) from ProQuest.
- 1988 to the present: includes Masters theses with abstracts
- 1997 to the present:
- 24-page free previews available for most documents
- Free access to full text of ALL Ohio University theses and dissertations
OhioLINK ETD Center
The OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertations Center includes citations, abstracts and in most cases full text of theses and dissertations written at member institutions since 2000. The full text of theses and dissertations is in PDF format and is freely available to anyone.
- The site also includes instructions for authors on how to create and submit their electronic thesis or dissertation.
- You can also browse ETDs by school and department by doing an Advanced Search.

- Search engine for full-text theses from more than 200 universities in more than a dozen European countries.
Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD)
- An “international organization dedicated to promoting the adoption, creation, use, dissemination, and preservation of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs).” The search engine includes millions of electronic theses and dissertations.
Open Access Theses and Dissertations (OATD)
- “Aims to be the best possible resource for finding open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world.”
- Provides the full text of open access dissertations and theses free of charge.
- WorldCat contains records from thousands of libraries around the world.
- Use the "Limit Results by" option to "Content: Thesis/dissertation."
