Music – Organ Performance Bachelor's Degree

Ohio University’s performance faculty provides comprehensive study through private instruction, large and small ensemble experiences, chamber music, pedagogy and literature courses, and master classes. The Organ Performance concentration curriculum is rooted in applied music study with significant components in practical and academic skills. The degree program is designed for students demonstrating exceptional talent, technical aptitude, potential to interpret advanced repertoire, and those who are ready to commit to the rigorous preparation necessary to fully develop their artistic talents and abilities. 

The Ohio University Keyboard Division has distinguished itself as a leader in the field of keyboard education, offering a broad spectrum of degrees and innovative curricula designed to train the next generation of keyboard musicians to enter the profession with skill and confidence.

The Ohio University chapel has an outstanding tracker organ built by the Gene Bedient company in 1997. It serves as the primary instrument for organ instruction and practicing for students pursuing a Bachelor's of Music (B.Mus.). degree with an Organ Major.

Admission Requirements

All undergraduates, whether prospective freshmen or transfer students, are required to audition for admission to the degree programs offered by the School of Music. In general, students may not pursue coursework in the major until they have successfully auditioned and been admitted to a music degree program.

Ohio University requires completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours for conferral of a bachelor’s degree.

Music majors pursuing a concentration in Organ Performance develop the ability to perform repertoire from all periods available to their instruments or voice. Experience in solo, chamber music, and large ensemble performance is required.

Begin with courses in aural skills, music theory, music history and literature. You'll also take upper-level courses in conducting, organ literature, organ pedagogy, and either French or German foreign language courses. 

You'll have Performance Labs plus eight semesters in MUS 3430 - Organ. Music students do eight semesters of ensemble and six semesters of chamber music, plus a junior and senior recital.
