HR is Relevant to All Careers

Human Resources Management can be about recruiting, hiring, developing, managing, and separating employees, but at its best, it’s about inspiring better workplaces. It’s about transforming the workplace into incredible employee experiences, so employees are happy to come to work on Monday morning instead of dreading it. Managers can help make this a reality by learning HR competencies, which can lead to success in all careers. SHRM’s Competency Model for HR professionals consists of nine competencies, which students will become familiar with in the OHIO HR Programs. These HR competencies can help any professional in any industry increase their value at the workplace.

As Steve Wynn put it, “Human resources is not a thing we do, it’s the thing that runs our businesses.”  Human resources elevate companies to greatness by leveraging their most important asset - its people or human capital. HR increases value through people by supporting them, engaging them, and giving them everything they need to perform at a high level, which ultimately inspires better workplaces.

Courtney McIntosh '19

Senior Coordinator -Talent Acquisition, Cardinal Health

I graduated in May of 2019 with a Business Management and Strategic Leadership degree and a Human Resource certificate program certificate. For the past 4 years, I have worked as a Senior Coordinator in Talent Acquisition at Cardinal Health in Dublin, Ohio. Within this role, I work with candidates through the interview, offer, and onboarding process, and I am currently supporting our European Markets.

The classes I took within the certificate program led me to believe I wanted to work in the recruiting field, which is exactly where I landed! Without those courses, I wouldn’t have understood what exactly goes into recruiting. I don’t think I would have been considered a competitive candidate during the interview process.

I am thankful that I took the gamble on a brand-new certificate program and was one of the first members of the Human Resource certificate program. This program is exactly what Ohio University needs to continue to make our Business Bobcats stand out!
