Internship Process & Support For Undergraduate Students
At the Scripps College of Communication, we believe in learning that goes beyond the classroom. Internships provide valuable real-world experiences that are helpful for securing full-time employment in the communication industry.
The success of our graduates starts with a strong internship program. Learn about internship requirements and who to connect with for questions before you get started.
Internship Process
- Check the "Are Internships Required" section of this webpage to determine if an internship is required for your major. If so, start by reading the internship requirements information for your program. If you still feel uncertain, talk to your student success advisor or the internship coordinator for your school.
- Prepare: Determine what kind of internship you want to do, learn about internship resources, prepare your resume, and begin networking and searching for an internship.
- Scholarships: Find funding for your internship, if needed.
- Complete the internship report form near the end of your internship or after your internship has been completed.
Are Internships Required?
The Scripps College of Communication encourages all students in the college to complete and report internships. Only students in two schools are required to complete an internship to graduate:
- The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism
- The School of Visual Communication
Students in both schools are required to complete the internship report form to ensure your DARS will be updated.
If you feel uncertain whether or not you are required to complete an internship to graduate or have questions about internship requirements, you can talk to your Student Success Advisor in the Harris Student Support Center or connect with the internship coordinator for your school.
Internship Requirements
If you are in an E.W. Scripps School of Journalism or School of Visual Communication major, you will need to complete an internship that meets the specific requirements in order to graduate.
E.W. Scripps School of Journalism Internship Requirements
- You must complete an internship with a minimum of 200 hours.
- The internship can be paid or unpaid.
- You are required to complete an Internship Pre-approval form and have it signed by your journalism faculty mentor.
- The signed Internship Pre-approval form is due the last day of classes the semester before you intern.
- An Internship Pre-Approval form submitted after you have already completed the internship will not be accepted, and your internship will not be approved as meeting your graduation requirement.
You can find the form and more information on the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism's Forms webpage.
School of Visual Communication Internship Requirements
- You must complete an internship with a minimum of 400 hours.
- The internship must be paid.
Complete the Internship Report Form
Report your internship through the internship report form. Students in the E.W. School of Journalism and the School of Visual Communication are required to complete and internship and report them through the internship report form.
You must complete the form in its entirety, complete with your supervisor's name and email. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to Director of Student Development Erin Roberts.
What Happens After Completing the Form?
For students in the E.W. School of Journalism and the School of Visual Communication, the internship evaluation form is used to verify that you have completed your internships. After you have completed the internship report form, here's what you can expect:
- Your internship supervisor will receive an email from Ohio University Scripps College of Communication with an internship evaluation link and password that allows them to complete and return your internship evaluation.
- After your internship supervisor completes your evaluation form, it will be sent to you academic advisor for approval.
- After your academic advisor approves your internship evaluation form, your DARS will be updated to reflect you have completed your internship requirement for your degree.
