Teaching & Learning Systems Portfolio

About

Products that provide instructional technology and resources directly supporting teaching and learning. Includes learning management systems, instructional technology support, assessment and learning analytics, lecture capture, learning spaces management, and polling and surveys.

Vision

The Teaching and Learning Technologies portfolio will enable the design, delivery, and assessment of curriculum with expertise, technology, and support consistently meeting student and faculty expectations.

Portfolio Priority

A Portfolio Priority is not the only work happening in this Portfolio, but it is the highest priority. If we do not make progress on this priority, the Portfolio will not be successful:

Portfolio Priority: Teaching and Learning Systems

Foster a data-centric approach to make fiscally responsible decisions in our software evaluations, renewals, and corresponding support staffing models while keeping the student experience in mind.

Roadmap

The Teaching & Learning Systems roadmap lays out where we currently are and where we expect to be in the coming months and years. This roadmap will be updated regularly to reflect changing industry standards and changing needs within the University, but the overall trajectory should be predictable from semester to semester.

Notable Accomplishments

  • Continued Transition to Canvas

Of all OHIO courses, 45% of courses used Canvas in spring 2026. This is based on courses published in Canvas as of April 3, 2026. For support, Canvas handled +74% of ticket needs through its 24/7 support offerings from August 2025-April 2026, though total support demand decreased approximately 9% compared to the prior year.

  • Continued to Evolve C.A.T.S.

C.A.T.S. launched in Fall 2024 in centrally scheduled Athens-based classrooms. Faculty can leverage a single reporting structure to share concerns with classrooms. In the Spring semester (2026), OIT received 385 tickets. Average response time for ALL tickets was 12 minutes and the average resolution time for ALL tickets was 3 hours and 2 minutes.

  • Delivered Student Cost Savings through Digital Course Materials

The Digital Course Content program (Inclusive Access) continues to impact more students, with the highest number of course sections (924) enrolled to date. Since summer of 2018, the program has saved $12 million in textbook costs to OHIO students.

  • Supported Advance Ohio Higher Education Act Provost Implementation Working Groups

    • Student and Peer Evaluations of Teaching Working Group: All colleges, excluding HCOM, now leverage Blue for evaluations and all courses are now evaluated using the new Standard Operating Procedure
    • Publicly Accessible Course Syllabus Working Group: Supported the launch of Concourse Syllabus to ensure early access to Canvas courses and the new tool in March 2026 to provide faculty with as much time as possible to prepare for its use for fall semester.
    • American Civics Literacy Course Working Group: Consulting the working group with Canvas best practices to implement the new civics course requirements.
    • Intellectual Diversity in Course Approvals Working Group: Collaborating with the working group on required improvements for OCEAN.
