Study Away for Scripps College Undergraduate Students

Students in the Scripps College of Communication have several opportunities to participate in Study Away programs, domestically and abroad, both in and outside the college.

    Scripps in NYC


    The Scripps in NYC program offers an in-depth look at various facets of the communication industry in the Big Apple. Designed as a seven-week, half-semester course (COMM 3810) beginning after spring break, the course culminates in a mandatory four-day trip to NYC. Students interact with alumni and work on class projects aimed at increasing their knowledge of working as a professional in NYC.

    OHIO-in-LA


    The OHIO-in-LA program is designed to give students an intensive experience of living and working in Hollywood's media and creative industries. Students take classes for OHIO credit, intern at LA-based media companies, network with hundreds of professionals, tour studios and attend productions, and produce a short film.

    Scripps Semester in D.C.


    A collaboration between the School of Visual Communication and the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, the Scripps Semester in D.C. is open to all Scripps College of Communication students and Political Science majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students learn from industry professionals working in journalism (print, broadcast, data and photojournalism), strategic communication, commercial photography, UX design, information graphics, data visualization and publication design.

This year, students will visit Public Hi-Fi in Providence, RI to work alongside famed producer/dummer, Jim Eno.

    South By Southwest


    Students in Ohio University SXSW industry immersion course attend the largest creative media industry gathering of the year, where they will observe firsthand the scope and networks that exist within today’s music and media industries. While there, they can build strategic partnerships for internships and network with potential employers, colleagues and clients.

    Storytelling, Technology, and Digital Media in Theme Parks


    The Storytelling, Technology, and Digital Media in Theme Parks program examines the media design, technology and storytelling principles employed in the development of theme parks. Through this semester-long class, students study the integration of different forms of media into one cohesive immersive environment. At the end of the semester, the class visits Orlando for a week-long, unforgettable field experience!

    Ecuador: Summer Training Applied Research & Service Learning


    The STARS program offers students an enriched understanding of Ecuadorian culture by placing students directly in the heart of local communities. Historically focused on research, the STARS program recently shifted towards experiential learning with a strong emphasis on cultural exposure and service-learning, allowing participants to actively engage with diverse populations and gain valuable insights into Ecuador’s rich cultural landscape.

    Japan: Animation and Culture in Tokyo


    Through the Animation and Culture in Tokyo program, students explore technical and narrative developments of animation while immersed in Tokyo's rich culture. By visiting sites important in history, traditional art and popular culture, students learn to recognize the diversity of cultural expression and reflect on Japanese customs and aesthetics to develop their own projects. No prior animation experience is required to participate in this program.

    Thailand: Culture and Communication


    During this ten-day study-abroad program, students visit the rural mountains of Chiang Mai in the north and the major city of Bangkok. Students learn about the culture and people of Thailand by spending a day caring for elephants at a sanctuary, taking cooking lessons, visiting many beautiful Buddhist temples, exploring Thai traditional dance at Moradokmai Theatre, shopping at an open market, and enjoying a sunset river cruise in Ayutthaya, the capital of Thailand. The will also spend an afternoon teaching English to Thai students and do group painting graffiti.
