Scripps Semester in D.C.
The Scripps Semester in DC program is a collaboration between the School of Visual Communication and the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.
The program gives students the opportunity to learn from industry professionals working in the nation's capital, focusing on journalism (print, broadcast, data and photojournalism), strategic communication, commercial photography, information graphics, data visualization, publication design for print and digital, and scripting a UX design.
The first four weeks of the term will be spent in a seminar setting, with each week focusing on different topics. For example, one topic will explore how media members cover Washington, D.C., events and influences. Those participating in the program will meet with a wide range of industry professionals from media outlets, tech firms, communication-related operations of government, and non-profit organizations working in the Washington, D.C. area.
As of Fall 2025, this study away program is now open to Political Science majors in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Testimonial
"[A] highlight has been the mentorship aspect of the program. I’ve been paired with a DC-based alum, Hannah Campbell, who completed the program in 2022. I would not just consider her to be a mentor, but a true friend. I find that to be very unique about the program."
---Katie Raines, sophomore political science and sociology-criminology double major
"The program really allowed me to grasp the pace at which people work in the field I wanted to work in. It gave me a leg up above other interns when I did internships with other DC-based organizations."
-- Scripps in DC alumna Raeann Ensworth
