Academic Requirements

Master's Degree (M.A./M.S.)

 Credit Requirements: 

  • Minimum 36 semester credits beyond bachelor's degree 
  • 12 credit hours in each emphasis area (minimum two areas) 
  • At least 6 credits providing depth of knowledge per area 
  • At least 6 credits providing breadth of knowledge per area 

IIP Seminar Requirement: 

  • IIP 6941 and 6942 during first two years 
  • May repeat in subsequent years (optional) 
  • Includes literature reviews and research presentations 

Final Project: 

  • Thesis, performance, and/or comprehensive examination 
  • Option determined by Primary Academic Unit policies 
  • Must be acceptable to Guidance Committee 

Timeline: 

  • Complete coursework by end of second year (full-time) or third year (part-time) 
  • Complete comprehensive exams by end of semester following coursework 
  • Present research at academic/professional conference by end of second year 

Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.)

Credit Requirements: 

  • Minimum 90 semester credits beyond bachelor's degree 
  • Up to 30 credits from prior graduate work may apply (Typically 60 hours post masters) 
  • 12 credit hours in each emphasis area (minimum two areas) 
  • At least 6 credits depth, 6 credits breadth per area 
  • Maximum 10 dissertation credits count toward degree 

IIP Seminar Requirement: 

  • Same as master's level requirements 

Final Project: 

  • Dissertation acceptable to Guidance Committee 
  • Must demonstrate original research contribution 

Timeline: 

  • Complete coursework by end of second year (full-time) or third year (part-time) 
  • Complete comprehensive exams by end of semester following coursework 
  • Present research at conference by end of third year (encouraged) 

Program of Study 

Requirements: 

  • Minimum two emphasis areas from different departments 
  • At least two departments must offer graduate degrees at sought level 
  • Include methods courses (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods) 
  • Submit within first year, revise annually 
  • Approved by Guidance Committee
