Fall 2022 Choral Placement Hearing Information

Fall 2022 Choral Placement Hearings will take place during the first week of classes, from Sunday, August 21 to Wednesday, August 24.  All School of Music majors for whom voice is their principal instrument must complete a hearing. Additionally, new members of The Singing Men of Ohio must complete a hearing.

To participate in the placement process, please submit your information via this Google Form:

Hearings will take place in Glidden 446 and take approximately 5-7 minutes. Hearings include scales and vocalises to determine a singer's appropriate voice part.

For voice students and students wishing to join University Singers, there will also be musicianship, aural, and sight-singing exercises to determine choral musicianship. Additionally, singers of all voice parts should prepare to sing on whatever syllable(s) are most comfortable the opening section of JS Bach's motet, "Lobet den Herrn."

  • Sopranos and altos should prepare from the beginning of the piece to the first note of measure 10.
  • Tenors and basses should prepare from the beginning of the piece through the second note of measure 10.

While students do their hearings individually, you will sign up as one of three singers in a time slot. After you've completed the Google Form above, follow this link to go to the SignUp Genius page to sign up for your placement hearing time:
