Join us for the 2nd Annual Cybersecurity Awareness Conference!

October 30 - 31, 2023

Walter Hall Rotunda

Join Ohio University's Information Security Office for a free conference spanning two days and covering data security best practices, with topics benefiting faculty, staff, and students. Light refreshments will be served.

Sessions held Monday, October 30 will focus on topics relevant to university faculty, staff, and researchers, while sessions held Tuesday, October 31 will provide information on personal and student-focused security. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend an individual session, multiple sessions, or join us for the duration of both days.

Josh Gonzalez, Chief Privacy Officer, OHIO

This presentation will make the case for institutional level compliance and privacy programs in higher education. Join Josh Gonzalez and Laura Myers as they discuss the importance of collaboration in our efforts to meet federal, state, and international regulatory requirements. Lastly, they will explore privacy principles that promote personal data protection, mitigate risk, and seek to build trust with students, faculty, staff, and the community.

2022's most popular session returns to the conference. Join us in an interactive game of Jeopardy that explores a variety of cybersecurity topics, and answers questions for the chance to win big!

Hanna Schmillen, AHIP Head of Research Services for the University Libraries, OHIO

 

Hanna Schmillen will describe and demonstrate the DMPTool platform and its usefulness with research data management plans. Topics will include the benefits of using DMPTool, importance of research data management plans, a demonstration of the DMPTool platform, and time for questions and discussion.

Disasters happen - but how do we recover from them, and what can we learn from the events after they are over? Jill Harris, Manager of Emergency Programs will present on Disaster Recovery, and how to be prepared at work and beyond.

Simulated Phishing in the Classroom 

Lori Marchese, Management Information Systems and Financial Professional 

 

Simulated phishing is the act of testing a group's ability to recognize and correctly respond to a malicious email. This can be a great tool to utilize in the classroom. Lori Marchese will present about her Cybersecurity Collaboration with OIT, and how she worked with the Ohio University technology team to provide an interactive educational opportunity for students.

Michael Mims will present on the current information security threat landscape and evolving trends- the most common threats being cryptomining, phishing, and ransomware, how we detect and remedy them, and the evolving threat of software supply chain attacks.

The Internet is an amazing tool full of wonderful "treats." However, many bad actors are hoping to play "tricks" on you as you navigate the digital world. In this presentation, Information Security Analyst Reagan Neviska will share what to watch out for online, and tips to keep your loved ones safe. Throughout the session, useful statistics will prove that everyone, regardless of generation, has something to learn, and something to teach!
