Microsoft MFA Changes

Overview

Microsoft is making changes to multi-factor authentication (MFA)  to improve account security and reduce reliance on authentication methods that are more vulnerable to phishing and fraud. As part of this initiative, Microsoft-provided SMS text message and phone-call authentication methods will no longer be supported beginning February 1, 2027.

To prepare for this change, Ohio University is encouraging users to enroll in the Microsoft Authenticator app, which provides a more secured and convenient way to verify your identity when signing in.

What is Changing

If you currently use text message (SMS) codes or phone calls to verify your identity, you will need to transition to another authentication method before February 1, 2027. More information about the retirement timeline is available on Microsoft’s website. Beginning in September 2026, some users will begin receiving prompts during sign-in asking them to enroll in a new authentication method. These prompts are part of Microsoft's transition plan and are designed to help users prepare before SMS and phone-call authentication methods are retired. Users who complete enrollment in Microsoft Authenticator will no longer receive these prompts.

What Do I Need to Do?

Those OHIO community members that use text message (SMS) codes or phone calls to verify their identity will need to enroll in the Microsoft Authenticator app.

The app allows you to securely approve sign-n requests from your mobile devices and provides a faster, more reliable experience than text messages or phone calls.

Already Using Another Authentication Method?

If you already use supported authentication methods such as:

  • Microsoft Authenticator
  • Passkeys
  • Hardware security tokens

no action is necessary. If you are unsure about your authentication methods, you can review your authentication methods to determine whether action is necessary.

Find answers to common questions about Microsoft's MFA changes, authentication methods, enrollment options, and upcoming deadlines.
Why am I receiving Microsoft prompts?

Microsoft is retiring SMS text message and phone-call authentication methods. Users impacted by this change will begin receiving prompts encouraging them to enroll in a supported authentication method.

Yes. Users may postpone enrollment and complete it at a later time. However, prompts will continue to appear until enrollment is completed.

Will I lose access to my account?

Users who continue to rely on SMS text messages or phone-call authentication methods will need to enroll in a supported authentication method before February 1, 2027, to avoid sign-in interruptions.

What if I don't have a smartphone?

Alternative authentication options are available. Users who don’t have a smartphone can purchase a YubiKey, which is a standalone authentication device.
