University Libraries will once again be hosting its annual Welcome Week event, Camp Alden. The event will be held outside of Alden Library’s fourth floor on Thurs., August 25, 2022, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., and is free of charge as well as open to everyone. Learn about all that Alden Library has to offer with activities such as s’more roasting, button making and an indoor scavenger hunt through all seven floors.

Camp Alden helps kickstart the beginning of a new year while also helping many first-year students get acquainted with Alden Library and all that it has to offer. The scavenger hunt is specifically made to run through all seven floors of Alden Library, so students can check out different possible study spaces, floors with varying noise levels and service desks where they can ask for help too.

Jen Harvey, the Libraries’ events coordinator, explained she hopes the event will allow students to feel more comfortable coming to the Library as well as be aware of services offered.

“So, if they [students] need help finding a book, they’ll know to come to the Library,” Harvey said. “If they need to print a paper, they know that we have printers in the Library.”

The scavenger hunt also gets students familiar with talking to librarians that may be able to assist with things such as classroom projects or finding primary resources for future research papers.

Along with the usual activities that students love, Harvey explained that a new addition will be joining the event this year.

“This will be the first year that the therapy dogs have been able to join us,” Harvey said. “But I’m predicting that that will be very popular as well, just based on how popular they are during finals when we have them in the Libraries.”

University Libraries has many things to offer for both new and current students alike. Even if you’ve been on campus for many years or it’s your first, there’s always something new to discover. Harvey explained that she enjoys watching students learn about the different spaces, experiencing the exciting energy during the night and reading feedback about the event.

“It really is my favorite event of the whole year,” Harvey said.

Make sure to mark your calendars for University Libraries’ annual Camp Alden event on Thurs., August 25, 2022, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., outside of Alden Library’s fourth floor. Check out all the other fun and exciting Welcome Week events going on as well.
