Program Eligibility and Requirements

To be considered a faculty-led study abroad or study away program, proposed programs must meet the following requirements:
  • Academic credit: Faculty-led programs must be tied to one or more Ohio University course and award academic credit to participating students.
  • Program timing: Programs should be offered during approved academic terms, which align with the standard Ohio University academic calendar.
  • Program leadership: Each program must identify a program director, an additional OHIO employee who will travel with the program, and an emergency backup.  These individuals will be responsible for the academic and operational oversight of the program, if selected.
    • Both must be active Ohio University employees; retirees are not eligible to serve as program leaders.
  • Educational Purpose: Programs should provide meaningful academic and experiential learning opportunities that support student learning outcomes, degree progress, professional development, or other educational objectives.
  • Health and safety: All proposed destinations and activities are subject to health, safety, and risk management review. OGO may recommend or require modifications to destinations, itineraries, activities, or other program elements before approval.
  • Previous program performance: For programs previously offered, enrollment history, financial performance, and overall program outcomes may be considered.

Proposal Requirements

The proposal provides information about the program's academic design, intended student audience, and operational requirements.

Applicants will be asked to describe:

  • Program details: Proposed countries and locations, anticipated dates, program format, and student population.
  • Academic content: Associated courses, credit hours, academic requirements, and how the program contributes to degree progression or completion.
  • Onsite learning: Planned activities, experiential learning opportunities, and engagement with local communities and cultures.
  • Strategic alignment: How the program supports University strategy, college-level goals, and student success.
  • Work-based learning: Opportunities to develop and apply professional skills through experiential or work-based learning activities, including alignment with applicable state requirements.
  • Program operations: Leadership, anticipated enrollment, logistical arrangements, and other information necessary to assess feasibility.
