Piano Technician

Chris Purdy is a native of Ohio and attended Eastern Kentucky University and Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City. After receiving a degree in Piano Technology, Chris began his career as the field service technician at the corporate headquarters of the Baldwin Piano Company in Cincinnati. While maintaining a busy schedule as an independent piano technician in the greater Cincinnati area, Chris became the technical service manager for J. Krefting Pianos, the Steinway dealer for southern Ohio and northern Kentucky region.

Chris accepted the piano technician position at Ohio University in 1991 and worked in that capacity for the next twenty years. After a six year stint at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, he has returned home to the OU School of Music.

Chris has successfully completed all of the Steinway factory training seminars at the Long Island, NY factory. He has also attended the Steinway comprehensive training for college and university technicians at the Oberlin Conservatory for three years, working with and learning from many of the most experienced Steinway technicians in the world. Additionally, Chris has worked at the Interlochen Fine Arts camp for many summers as a piano technician and performed major rebuilding and tuning work for the University of Alabama, Huntsville and Marietta College in Ohio. He is also recent graduate of the Yamaha Performance Piano Service Seminar at the Yamaha America headquarters in Buena Park, California.  

In his 35 year career, Chris has tuned for and worked closely with many of the top artists on the concert stage. These include Immanuel Ax, Menahem Pressler and the Beaux Arts trio, The Five Browns, Jamie Laredo and Joseph Kalichstein, to name just a few. He has also had the pleasure of working with leading popular acts including Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Gregory Hines, Art Garfunkel, The Barenaked Ladies, George Winston, and Mary Wilson of the Supremes.

Chris' wife is a music teacher at Athens Middle School. He has adult children in the Athens area and his twins are freshmen at Ohio University.
