Physical Activity & Wellness (PAW) Program Graduate Teaching Assistantship

Students pursuing a graduate degree in either Coaching Education or Parks, Recreation, Hospitality, and Tourism can apply for graduate teaching assistantships (GTA). More information on this position, detailed qualifications, and application requirements can be found below. Applications received by February 1st receive priority and are reviewed following admissions decisions.

Position Description:

This is a nine-month term appointment requiring a commitment of 20 hours/week, including office hours. The successful candidate will be responsible for (1) teaching activity-based courses in the Physical Activity & Wellness (PAW) program, (2) assisting in the management and maintenance of program equipment and supplies, (3) maintaining accurate course and risk management records, (4) providing general service to the program and department, and (5) serving as a positive role model for undergraduate students. The successful candidates will be expected to participate in a GTA orientation program before the start date of the academic year.

Qualifications: 

  1. Evidence of advanced skills or certification in a variety of the stated activity areas
  2. Commitment to quality undergraduate education and diversity
  3. First Aid & CPR Certification (up-to-date certification required)
  4. The ability to teach in a variety of the following areas:
  • Sport Courses: Flag Football, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, Basketball, Tennis, Racquetball, Ultimate Frisbee, Team Handball
  • Fitness Courses: Exercise and Conditioning, Circuit Training, Weight Training, Jogging (Additional certification preferred)
  • Ice Courses: Ice Skating, Hockey, Broomball
  • Aquatic Courses: Aqua Aerobics, Fundamentals and Intermediate Swimming, Swim Conditioning, (WSI Certification Required)
  • Other Activity Courses: Bowling, Disc Golf, Archery, Netball, Futsal

Starting Date: August of the appointed academic year.

Salary and Benefits: GTAs receive a full tuition waiver, plus a stipend of $13,000.
