Excellence in Team Teaching Award

The CHSP's mission to succeed in training healthcare professionals can take many forms. For this award, team teaching is defined as two (2) or more faculty members who effectively integrate their substantive and pedagogical knowledge in a single course to create an outstanding learning experience for students.  The monetary award of $1,000 will be equally divided between/among team members and deposited directly via payroll.

Eligibility

All faculty in CHSP are eligible for this award. A recipient may not receive this award in consecutive years.

Period of Consideration

Most recent evaluation period, i.e., January through December 

Nomination  

A team may be nominated by a chair/director, a colleague, or self-nominated.

Timeline 

• On or before last Friday in January: Nomination due January 26, 2024
• March 1, 2024: Nominated team members submit one complete set of materials online.  Convert your application to one consolidated PDF file.  Do not submit two or more applications.
• April 2024:   Date to be determined for the CHSP awards ceremony

Basic requirements of application:

Please use an 11-point, Arial font.  The entire application should not exceed seven (7 pages) – not include appendices.
Page 1: Cover page (include the faculty member names, name of award, and period of award).
Page 2:  If nominated by a chair/director or colleague, please provide a brief endorsement from that individual (who may NOT be a member of the team).  A formal letter may be submitted, but it is not required.
Pages 3-7:   In this section, please make sure that you address the following:

1. Description: Describe your team-teaching approach. How do the student outcomes support/demonstrate your approach? 
2. Rationale/justification: Explain how the approach was conceived.  For example, what problem(s), issues, or opportunities prompted the team-teaching experience?
3. Teaching philosophy: Explain how this approach or strategy relates to your overall teaching philosophy.  Does it impact/change your teaching philosophy?
4. Next step in this innovation:   Describe what was learned. How will that translate into future team-teaching experiences?
5. Include evidence of the nominees’ demonstrated abilities to use their combined expertise to provide an outstanding learning experience which may include any of the following:

• Leverage team teaching strategies to motivate students’ interest and learning and establish the relevance of the subject matter. 
• Set clear goals and expectations for learning in courses.
• Collaborate to design learning experiences that actively engage students.
• Collaborate to challenge learners to develop their critical thinking and independent learning abilities.
• Collaborate to design student assessment strategies that enhance learning.
• Collaborate to design strategies to facilitate feedback (e.g., instructor, self, and/or peer) on students’ learning to motivate and support progressive learning and growth. 
• Exhibit respect for students, which includes showing interest in students’ inquiries and ideas.
• Collect feedback, engage in professional learning activities, and reflect on teaching, in order to strengthen their teaching practices and improve student learning in team-taught environments.

6. Briefly describe how you would convey your unique approach/talent to team teaching as best practice to faculty members interested in creating or teaching a team-taught course.

Appendix (not required)

In an appendix, the nominees may provide evidence of teaching.   Examples of evidence include but are not limited to (a) the outcome or result of your teaching; (b) student work product; (c) student feedback on learning experiences or skills acquired; and/or (d) the results of a novel course evaluation method.

Review Committee

The CHSP Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee will serve as the selection committee.  In the event that one of the committee members is a nominee, a substitute committee member will be obtained from that department/school.

Award Selection by the Teaching and Learning Committee

The CHSP Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Committee will review the award submissions, select the recipients, and advise the CHSP Dean of its selections. If the Teaching/Learning Committee does not reach a consensus, it will forward the names of potential recipients to the Dean, who will make the final decision.
