Hands-on Experiences Addressing Justice Issues from Appalachian Ohio to the Global Stage

The Center for Law, Justice & Culture's Justice Labs provide Ohio University students with hands-on experience addressing real-world legal and justice issues. Through either the International Justice Lab or the Rural Justice Lab, students develop practical skills, work alongside legal professionals, and explore how law can create meaningful change in communities both locally and around the world.
International Justice Lab
Apply for International Justice Lab
Students collaborate with law schools nationwide on accountability and human rights projects, conducting legal research, documentation, writing, advocacy, and investigative work. Under the leadership of Ohio University alumnus David Crane, students work alongside law students and professionals while gaining firsthand exposure to international law, human rights, and justice systems around the world.
Rural Justice Lab
Students support legal aid clinics in Athens and Hocking counties, assisting with client intake, eligibility screening, and case documentation while observing attorney-client consultations. Through a partnership with Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio, students gain firsthand experience addressing access-to-justice challenges faced by low-income and rural communities.
Global‑to‑Local Impact
The labs reveal justice issues at vastly different scales—from documenting human rights abuses to ensuring rural Ohioans have access to basic civil legal services. Students gain perspective that law is both a global system and a deeply personal service.
Skill Development with Career Value
Students leave the programs with practical experience and professional skills that strengthen law school applications and prepare them for careers in law, public service, advocacy, government, and related fields.
Justice Labs are guided by experienced faculty, attorneys, and justice practitioners who provide mentorship, supervision, and professional insight. Through partnerships with regional, national, and international organizations, students engage in meaningful work while receiving expert support throughout the experience.
