Shea Burden
Biography
Dr. Shea Burden, received her BBA in Accounting and Business Pre-Law from Ohio University in 2004, her MBA from the University of Houston – Clear Lake in 2009, and a PhD from the University of Scranton in 2021. Shea earned her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License in 2007, Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Certification in 2009 and was part of the inaugural class of recipients of the Investor Relations Charter (IRC) Certification in 2016. She received the honor of being part of the 2019 inaugural class of 40 under 40 for the National Investor Relations Institute.
After completing her BBA, Shea went to work for Deloitte & Touché. Following working in public accounting, she did a finance development rotation program for a company called Lubrizol where she spent time in general accounting, internal audit, Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) management and then transferred from the corporate headquarters to a plant in Texas to lead business process improvements. She transitioned from business process improvements into Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accounting where she worked on writing the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) and footnotes for Annual Reports, Form 10-Qs, and Form 10-Ks.
Her next pursuit was investor relations where she worked her way up from analyst to manager and drafted Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Board of Directors presentations, earnings call scripts, and marketing materials. She accompanied executives on domestic and international travel to prepare them for interviews with analysts and investors. Her final role before becoming a professor at Ohio University in 2017 was Senior Manager of Corporate Accounting.
Shea has been an Assistant Professor in the School of Accountancy since 2017 at Ohio University and Director of the Copeland Scholars Honors Program since 2021. She has gone on exploratory trips to Botswana, Hungary, and South Africa to create programs for college and high school students and is the founder of the Ohio University South Africa Global Consulting Program (GCP). She is an entrepreneur at heart and built a Barbershop in Texas, which she owned from 2015 to 2019.
Shea has a passion for service and has served in the following roles in Jack and Jill of America, Inc: Chapter Financial Secretary, Chapter Treasurer, Mid-Western Region - Regional Community Impact Chair, Mid-Western Region - Regional Lead Teen Advisor, Chief of Staff to the National Treasurer, and Executive Assistant to the Regional Director. She also served as Treasurer for the Central Ohio Chapter of National Investor Relations Institute. She currently serves as the Provisional Group President to Fairfield Area Moms.
Shea loves to travel and has been to Botswana, Hungary, Japan, Norway, South Africa and many other countries. In 2017, she decided to combine her love for accounting, educational programs, entrepreneurship, investor relations, marketing and travel with her desire to help students pay down student loan debt and created the company called PayEDU, LLC. Shea believes we never know how our actions will impact the future of others so service to the community and a commitment to excellence are a lifestyle, not just acts.
