Athens Campus

Green Project Camp

Hosted by the Stevens Literacy Center

When: June 5-29, 2023 | 9:30am-2:30pm

Where:Stevens Literacy Center, Athens Campus

Cost: $200 when registering for all four weeks. $75 each when registering for a week at a time.

About: Each week will focus on aspects related to environmental conservation and climate change. Environmental literacy will be infused with science, social studies, math. Faculty and staff in the PCOE and across the colleges at OHIO will be invited to contribute to planning and programming. Community organizations, local parks and recreation, the local library, and departments of natural resources will be an integral part of comprehensive programming focused on teaching children about how make a positive impact on our planet and become environmental ambassadors for their schools. Field trips and experiential learning opportunities outside the SLC will be scheduled as often as possible.

High School Journalism Workshop

Hosted by the Scripps College of Communication

When: July 11-15, 2023 

Where: Athens Campus 

Cost: $400 

About: The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism’s annual workshop for high school journalism students and advisers started in 1946 and is one of the oldest programs in the nation. The workshop offers high school students and teachers the opportunity to interact with our faculty and professional journalists while learning journalism’s established practices and latest innovations in a campus setting.

Media High School Workshop

Hosted by the Scripps College of Communication

When: July 26-29, 2023 

Where: Athens Campus

Cost: $550

About: The High School Media Workshop is a hands-on creative opportunity to explore your production passion. This overnight, on-campus experience will allow you to work with other high school students to create original work in the OHIO studio and lab spaces. The workshop includes overnight accommodations and dining on campus to immerse you in the Athens student environment.

Camp Boost 

Hosted by the Center for Intervention Research in Schools

When: Weekdays July 24 - Aug. 11, 2023 

Where: Athens Campus 

Cost: $210-$330 per child for the entire camp, depending on the sliding scale.

About: Three-week summer day camp that aims to help students get a jump-start on the school year while providing a fun, social, and recreational environment. We are looking for all children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old, but we will reserve openings for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). About: The OHIO Museum Complex (OMC) is home to a broad range of self-guided activities for K-12 and general public audiences. An immersive nature gallery on the second floor of Lin Hall houses an exhibition entitled Through the Appalachian Forest, featuring self-guided exploration of connections across nature, art, geography and history—with immersive nature sounds and hands on arts activities that change from week to week.  

OMC’s Outdoor Museum visitor area begins just outside the front door of the museum, with a pollinator garden and an interpretive trail system that encourages outdoor experiential learning in a beautiful parklike setting spanning 700 acres on The Ridges. Educational signs highlight places of interest like the OHIO astronomy observatory, sustainability features like the composting facility, the land laboratory, and more. Three trail loops launch from different parts of The Ridges, featuring inspirational quotes and information about OHIO’s history. Additional signage across campus highlights features like the Hocking River (moved to its current location by the Army Corps of Engineers), and international connections like OHIO’s unique partnership with Chubu University in Japan, memorialized by the many cherry trees planted along the bike path. 

OMC’s web-based app (mAppAthens) features dozens of tours curated by local experts on a variety of topics, from history to poetry, nature to wellbeing, that enable unique exploration of the campus and community. 

Fine Arts Pre-College Programs

Hosted by the College of Fine Arts

When: Session 1: June 5–16 (residential stay June 4–17); Session 2: June 26–30 (residential stay June 25–July 1)

Where: Athens Campus 

Cost: First Session fees are $645 with the option to enroll for 2.0 university credits. Second session fees are $375 and include 1.0 university credit. Residential stay with all meals included is additional cost. 

About: Develop your personal voice while creating and performing college-level artworks in our professional studio facilities with OHIO’s Summer Studios. Intensive, hands-on workshops with the School of Art + Design featuring graphic design, fiber workshop, painting & drawing, and figure drawing workshops. Filmmaking and 3D animation sessions are offered with the School of Film. Performing arts programs include the long running Summer Music Academy in the School of Music, the Summer Dance Institute with the School of Dance— this year featuring the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company—and both an acting and a music theater session in the School of Theater. ACMS Summer Music Week

Hosted by the Athens Community Music School in the College of Fine Arts

When: Week 1 is July 10-14 and week 2 is July 17-21, running 9am to 3:30pm each day

Where: Athens Campus, Glidden Hall 

Cost:  $150 per week (+$10 registration fee), financial aid is available 

About: For students entering grades 1 through 6. Join us for a week (or two) of music making together! We'll be singing, playing music, dancing, and much more. Summer Law & Trial Institute

About: The Summer Law & Trial Institute is a two-week program that aims to increase understanding of the law and its possibilities among Ohio high school students from Southeast Ohio. The program also seeks to foster an interest in all aspects of legal education, service, and issues, and to create the next generation of legal, advocacy, and community professionals.

About: Kids on Campus provides summer and after-school programming that offers educational, nutritional and recreational opportunities to the region's children. Kids and Cops Day returns to OHIO Lancaster campus for the 7th season! Agencies throughout Fairfield County and surrounding areas will attend with cruisers, helicopters, Air Evac, S.W.A.T. vehicles, patrol cars, motorcycles, a smoke house, and more. 

Goody bags, hot dogs, and refreshments will be available for participants. This is a fun time for all ages!

Women in Technology and Science (WITS) 2023 

When: Friday, May 1, 8 am to 5 pm  

Where: OHIO Lancaster | Brasee Hall Auditorium 

About: Women in Technology and Science (WITS) is a one-day, hands-on program for more than three hundred young students ages 12-14 who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics as a career. 

Cohorts and representatives from area schools participate in interactive projects and sessions led by female STEM professionals with expertise in science, technology, engineering, and math during this bi-annual program. 

The entire conference, including lunch and the keynote presentation, is offered at no cost to the students or to their schools. 

 

Southern Campus

Bobcat Academy

About: When local school districts dismiss students for their long-awaited summer break, a host of opportunities for engagement and learning for those eight and up will open at OHIO Southern. The 2023 Bobcat Academy will provide youth with eclectic workshops and opportunities to develop leadership, academic and imaginative skills.
