Research Interest

 

My research focuses on identifying and characterizing the early warning signs of beta-cell decline that precede the onset type 2 diabetes. My work has provided proof-of-principle that circulation levels of proinflammatory cytokines caused by obesity are sufficient to trigger beta-cell failure in diabetes-prone individuals. Current efforts focus on identifying novel genes and pathways involved in beta-cell stress responses related to chronic low-grade inflammation.
