Dance Admissions & Auditions

Undergraduate Admissions Requirements

In addition to general admission requirements to Ohio University, the Dance program requires a dance application and dance audition. Acceptance to the Dance major or minor program in choreography and performance is by talent audition. Auditions are scheduled to coordinate with various University application deadlines.

The audition provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training, and aptitude for further study in dance. Auditionees are not expected to demonstrate proficiency in all techniques. The audition committee looks for physical strength and flexibility, spatial and rhythmic accuracy, performance quality, focus, and creative expression.

We offer several audition dates in the fall and winter, on our beautiful Athens campus and at off-campus sites such as dance festivals. All listed auditions offer you the opportunity to be considered for admission and scholarship

Although attending a scheduled audition is the best possible means of representing your talent, if you are unable to attend, please contact the School of Dance at dance@ohio.edu or 740.593.1826 to discuss the possibility of other arrangements. 

On-Campus Audition Dates, 2026-2027:

• Nov. 6, 2026 — Open House + Audition
• Jan. 29. 2027 — Open House + Audition

You also can register for an off-campus audition at several regional dance festivals.

All high school students are welcome to join us on Open House dates. Come see what life is like for students in the School of Dance! Prospective students can select from optional activities such as dance class observations, class participation, campus tours, Q&A with the Director, or dance facilities tours led by student ambassadors. High school seniors can additionally complete their audition on that day.

OHIO Admissions

Join Us at Experience the Arts Day

Experience the Arts Day is held annually in October. This presents another opportunity for prospective students to learn about our program and audition to be considered for admission to the dance major and for scholarship consideration. For details and to register, visit Experience the Arts Day.

Transfer Requirements

If you are a transfer student, an audition is required for admission into the program. Additionally, dance courses taken at other universities must either be pre-qualified by Ohio’s Transfer Assurance Guide, or be evaluated by the Dance Chair.
