Dance Admissions & Auditions

Undergraduate Admissions Requirements

In addition to general admission requirements to Ohio University, the Dance program requires a dance application and dance audition. Acceptance to the Dance major or minor program in choreography and performance is by talent audition. Auditions are scheduled to coordinate with various University application deadlines.

The audition provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training, and aptitude for further study in dance. Auditionees are not expected to demonstrate proficiency in all techniques. The audition committee looks for physical strength and flexibility, spatial and rhythmic accuracy, performance quality, focus, and creative expression.

We offer several audition dates in the fall and winter, on our beautiful Athens campus and at off-campus sites such as dance festivals. All listed auditions offer you the opportunity to be considered for admission and scholarship

Although attending a scheduled audition is the best possible means of representing your talent, if you are unable to attend, please contact the School of Dance at dance@ohio.edu or 740.593.1826 to discuss the possibility of other arrangements. 

On-Campus Audition Dates, 2026-2027:

• Nov. 6, 2026 — Open House + Audition
• Jan. 29. 2027 — Open House + Audition

You also can register for an off-campus audition at several regional dance festivals.

All high school students are welcome to join us on Open House dates. Come see what life is like for students in the School of Dance! Prospective students can select from optional activities such as dance class observations, class participation, campus tours, Q&A with the Director, or dance facilities tours led by student ambassadors. High school seniors can additionally complete their audition on that day.

Join Us at Experience the Arts Day

Experience the Arts Day is held annually in October. This presents another opportunity for prospective students to learn about our program and audition to be considered for admission to the dance major and for scholarship consideration. For details and to register, visit Experience the Arts Day.

Transfer Requirements

If you are a transfer student, an audition is required for admission into the program. Additionally, dance courses taken at other universities must either be pre-qualified by Ohio’s Transfer Assurance Guide, or be evaluated by the Dance Chair.

Open House + Audition Schedule

Nov. 6, 2026

9:00 – 9:30 a.m. | Check-In & Registration

Start your day by checking in with our admissions and School of Dance staff. Participants will receive event materials, a schedule for the day, and important audition information while enjoying a chance to settle in and meet fellow prospective students.

9:30 – 10:00 a.m. | Meet a Student Ambassador & Tour the School of Dance

Get an insider's perspective from one of our current dance majors. Student ambassadors will lead guests through the School of Dance facilities, including studios, performance spaces, and student gathering areas, while sharing their experiences as an Ohio University School of Dance major.

10:00 – 10:30 a.m. | Warm-Up

Prepare for the audition experience with a guided warm-up led by School of Dance senior BFA Dance majors. This session will focus on safely activating the body, increasing mobility, and getting dancers physically and mentally ready for movement.

10:30 – 11:45 a.m. | Dance Technique & Audition Class

Experience a college-level dance class while completing your audition. Faculty will lead participants through technical exercises and movement combinations designed to showcase artistry, musicality, technical foundation, and performance potential. This class offers an authentic glimpse into the training environment within the School of Dance. Phrase work will include modern, ballet, jazz, and improvisation. 

11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. | Lunch in an Ohio University Dining Hall

Enjoy lunch in one of Ohio University's dining facilities and get a taste of campus life. This is a great opportunity to connect informally with fellow prospective students, current majors, and School of Dance representatives while exploring the student dining experience.

12:55 – 2:45 p.m. | Take Class with Our OHIO Dance Community

Immerse yourself in the daily rhythm of the School of Dance by joining a regularly scheduled dance class alongside current OHIO dance students. Experience firsthand the collaborative, supportive, and creative atmosphere that defines our program.

Parent Option: During this time, parents and family members are invited to participate in an optional campus tour to learn more about Ohio University's academic resources, student services, residential experiences, and campus traditions.

3:00 – 5:00 p.m. | School of Dance Friday Workshop

Conclude your visit by attending our weekly School of Dance Friday Workshop, a cornerstone of our departmental community. This gathering highlights student and faculty creative work, fosters artistic dialogue, and provides insight into the collaborative culture of the program. All registered students and their guests are invited to stay for an informal showing featuring selected senior choreography projects. Enjoy an exclusive look at works in development and see the creativity, innovation, and artistic growth of our graduating dance majors in action and learn more about our process.
