Erin chose the topic of civic transparency because of the growing disconnect between government and citizens, which has led to policies that many feel do not reflect the public’s needs. This divide has contributed to a loss of trust, as well as feelings of frustration, fear, and division within communities, which is what she aimed to fix in her project. Throughout this project, she realized that safety must be thoughtfully considered for both citizens and legislators, and that designing a space where representatives also feel secure, supported, and empowered to engage in meaningful conversations is a complex challenge. This experience has inspired her to pursue a path in government and corporate design, while also deepening her knowledge in the future through healthcare design. She is drawn to the ways the built environment can address difficult challenges and ultimately help people feel supported and healed through intentional design.
