Meta-majors are a great option for students who have a general subject area of interest but would like to explore their options further before committing to a specific major. Applying to a meta-major through the College of Arts and Sciences will help give your coursework a focus and lead you to specific bachelor's degree options.
Most students in a meta-major select a more focused major within the first year of exploration, but you are allowed to earn up to 60 semester hours before you must select a degree program. OHIO currently offers two meta-majors:
- The humanities meta-major offers students room to explore their interests through courses such as English, humanities, history, philosophy, languages, art and religious studies.
- The social science meta-major allows students to dive into courses such as sociology, psychology, political science, economics and anthropology to help narrow their options.
Students in a meta-major work closely with an advisor to align their goals and interests with an OHIO program that leads to a specific bachelor's degree that they can complete on an OHIO regional campus or by relocating to the Athens campus. On their own, meta-majors do not culminate in a degree.
The Biology Relocation Pathway is different from an undecided or meta-major option. Offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, it's a specific pathway in which students complete two years of very specific coursework at an OHIO regional campus before relocating to the Athens campus to complete the B.S. in Biological Sciences.
The Biological Sciences major is a flexible degree program that is ideal for students who wish to pursue a biological sciences graduate program or professional school. It's also a great option for students interested in specialties such as medical laboratory science or medical technology, exercise physiology, neuroscience, and ecology and evolutionary biology.
