Students interested in enhancing their workplace credentials can create an individualized, technical associate degree by leveraging technical coursework already earned at a career center or designing their own degree combining courses selectively drawn from two or more programs currently offered by Ohio University. In either case, the goal of the Associate of Technical Study program is to serve a career objective not addressed by an existing program at the University. Students will collaborate with an Ohio University advisor to design a personalized Associate of Technical Study program.
Students completing Ohio University’s applied associate degrees are required to complete 15 credit hours of Ohio Transfer 36-approved coursework including:
Ohio University offers two types of ATS degrees: Type A and Type B. Please see below for a description of each.
Type A is a coherent combination of technical courses selectively drawn from two or more programs currently offered by Ohio University to serve a career objective not addressed by one of those existing programs. Students are building their program primarily from Ohio University courses and generally have not earned credit as specified in the Ohio Career-Technical Credit Transfer(CT)2.
Students will work with an ATS faculty advisor to create a planned course of study consisting of 30 technical credits by selecting available technical courses from at least two areas. When combined, these courses must be aligned to meet a clearly identifiable career objective. Additionally, the career objective must be distinct from any other technical programs offered at Ohio University. Transfer courses received may also be applicable to the career objective. Use of transfer credit would depend on appropriateness to the career objective, as approved by the Technical Study Review Committee.
Type B. is designed for students who have completed an approved Ohio Career-Technical Credit Transfer (CT)2 program at a career, vocational or continuing education center in Ohio. Students completing an approved (CT)2 program would receive transfer credit according to the Ohio Career-Technical Credit Transfer Guidelines. This credit would then apply toward the technical (major) requirements of the ATS degree. For the Type B ATS, 30 total technical credit hours are required. If the above (CT)2 program is less than 30 credit hours, the remaining related hours must be earned at Ohio University. When combined, these courses must be aligned to meet a clearly identifiable career objective. All proposals with less than 30 (CT)2 credit hours or were completed at a continuing education center may require review for program admission by the Technical Study Review Committee.

Anyone who holds a high school diploma or has a GED certificate is eligible for admission to any Ohio University regional campus. Regional campuses have a rolling admissions policy which means that students may be admitted anytime during the year. Applicants will be accepted until class begins each semester. However, prospective students are advised to begin the application process as soon as possible so that they may be given important dates and deadlines in a timely manner. Freshmen applicants are encouraged to complete an online application for enrollment.
You are a transfer applicant if you have completed nine or more semester (12 quarter) hours at another institution after you graduated from high school. If you have completed fewer than nine semester hours, you will apply as a freshman applicant. To apply as a transfer student, applicants are encouraged to complete an online application for enrollment.
