A set of renewable scholarships designed to ensure that an extraordinary OHIO education is within reach, the program recognizes exemplary academic achievement within our regional communities with awards for fall 2023 incoming full-time freshmen.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
The Ohio University Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships has information regarding financial aid available to OHIO students. While the OHIO Southern Student Services Office is available to answer all of your questions and help you secure financial aid, your financial aid package will be processed on our Athens campus. Please stop by the OHIO Southern Student Services Office or contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for more information.
-
OHIO Regional Promise
This renewable pilot program will cover the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees to attend an Ohio University regional campus for fall 2023 incoming full-time, Pell-eligible freshmen with a minimum 3.0 high school GPA.
-
4 Years, 1 Low Price
The OHIO Guarantee means students attending Ohio University Southern will pay a single fixed rate that covers tuition and most fees for four years. Ohio residents who enroll full-time through one of OHIO’s regional campuses will pay just $3,002 per semester.
FAFSA Overview
In order to receive federal grants and loans as well as qualify for need-based scholarships, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This online government application qualifies students for federal aid based on financial qualifications. The FAFSA is available on October 1 of each year for the following summer, fall, and spring semesters using two previous years tax information. It is important that students remember to complete the FAFSA each year with their same FSA ID.
To attend the Southern campus, it is recommended students use both the OHIO Southern school code (003103) and the Athens campus school code (003100) on the FAFSA.
Students who are under the age of 24, not married, without dependents, not veterans, and do not have special circumstances that demonstrate a separation from the student’s biological parents are considered dependent students and must use their parent’s financial information on the FAFSA.
The OHIO Southern Student Services Office is happy to assist you with your financial aid questions and completion of your FAFSA.
Other Forms of Aid
Grants
Many OHIO Southern students qualify for the Pell Grant or other grants upon completion of the FAFSA. Grants are considered gift aid and do not have to be repaid. Although grants are a very desirable source of financial aid, the availability of grants is generally limited to students with the greatest need.
Loans
Upon completion of the FAFSA, most OHIO Southern students also qualify for Federal Student Loans. Though parental information may be considered to determine how much a student may receive, these loans are in the student’s name and not in the parent’s name. There are two main types of Federal Student Loans that students may receive.
- The subsidized loan is available to students who qualify financially. For this loan, the federal government pays the interest on the loan while the student is in school at least half-time (six hours).
- The unsubsidized loan is available to students regardless of financial need. For this loan the interest begins accruing from the time the loan is disbursed. While you may allow your interest to accumulate until repayment begins, it is recommended that students make regular interest payments, if possible.
For both of these loans, repayment begins six months after the student graduates or stops attending school.
Award Letters
An award letter is the amount of financial aid OHIO can offer to each student based on that student’s financial and academic eligibility. Award letters can be found by logging into the Student Center and clicking “View Financial Aid” under the Finances section.
An award letter is only available if the student has completed the FAFSA and the verification process, if required. If an award letter is available, students will have the option to accept or decline their offer which may include scholarships, grants, loans, or other forms of financial aid. Students should visit the OHIO Southern Student Services Office with questions or concerns regarding their award letter.
Scholarships
Scholarships can help a student meet all the expenses of a college education. Some scholarships are for tuition only while others may help with tuition and, once the tuition commitment has been met, assist students with books and supplies.

Scholarships for New Freshmen
The OHIO Regional Advantage Awards Program can open the doors to an education at an OHIO regional campus – and then wherever your path leads. The OHIO Regional Advantage Awards program recognizes exemplary academic achievement within our regional communities. First-year students who are new to an Ohio University regional campus in fall 2023 as full-time, degree-seeking students are eligible for consideration. All incoming first-year students who submit a complete application for admission to an Ohio University regional campus, including the application form and all required supporting materials, by January 15 will be considered automatically for the merit-based portion of the OHIO Regional Advantage Awards.
OHIO Regional Advantage Awards Program
Incoming students should also complete the regional campus application for admission and FAFSA by the January 15 priority deadline to ensure consideration for campus-specific scholarships.
Scholarships for Upperclass Students
All upper-class students should apply for scholarships at OHIO (Athens or Southern) through the Online Scholarship Application. Students who are selected for an Ohio University scholarship for the upcoming academic year will be notified by June 1 by postal mail.
