Nursing Major (A.A.S.)
Program Overview
Ohio University offers an accredited, two-year Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Nursing, which combines coursework and clinical experiences in contemporary health care environments. Following successful completion of the A.A.S. degree in Nursing, the student is eligible to submit an application to the board of nursing and take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses (RN). Students in the Ohio University A.A.S. in Nursing program are dually enrolled in the Ohio University online RN-to-BSN program.
Ohio University also offers an LPN to RN track for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) desiring to obtain an A.A.S. in Nursing. Upon completion of the A.A.S., students are eligible to submit an application to the applicable board of nursing and be eligible to take the NCLEX for Registered Nurses (RN).
Graduates with an A.A.S. degree in Nursing work in a variety of settings. Some of these include hospital-based medical centers, clinics, long-term nursing facilities, and private practice.
The A.A.S. program and the LPN-to-RN track are offered at Chillicothe, Southern, and Zanesville. Please contact your campus office if you have questions (please see contact information above).
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program:
- Students will be able to apply knowledge and evidence-based practice to provide a safe and effective care environment for their patients.
- Students will be able to demonstrate autonomy in assessing and analyzing physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural patient data for a variety of patient populations across the lifespan.
- Students will be able to utilize the nursing process while providing care for a variety of patient populations across the lifespan.
- Students will be able to employ effective communication skills when interacting with patients, families, members of the community, and members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Students will be able to execute nursing care in a professional manner, adhering to ethical and legal frameworks.
Admissions Information
First-Year Admission
Students must meet University admission requirements and admission to the associate degree nursing program. Admission to the associate degree nursing program is selective.
Change of Program Policy
Selective admission requirements must be met for admission to the A.A.S. degree program.
External Transfer Admission
Requirements for University admission must be met. Transfer students are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Opportunities Upon Graduation
After graduation, graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for registered nursing licensure.
